A filter system including a method for self cleaning the filter system of an electronic equipment enclosure where air flow is monitored either by monitoring fan performance of air flow velocity through the enclosure. The system includes two filters elements, an upstream ASHRAE or HEPA filter element to block particulate matter and a downstream PTFE filter element to block water vapor. The ASHRAE or HEPA filter element is relatively inexpensive and easy to clean. The PTFE filter element is more expensive and difficult to clean. Thus, the cheaper filter is used to protect the more expensive filter from contaminants and to increase its useful life. The method of self cleaning includes stopping the fan when a signal is received indicating a predetermined resistance to air flow which is a function of blockage of the filter elements, thereafter operating the fan at an increased rotational velocity to determine whether the fan itself is malfunctioning, thereafter slowing and stopping the fan to allow the fan to be reversed, rotating the fan in reverse for a predetermined period of time, such as five minutes, thereafter slowing and stopping the fan and returning the fan to its usual rotational velocity and direction. If the resistance to air flow is still above a predetermined level, the fan is again slowed, stopped and reversed and then returned to normal operation. The reversal operation can be conducted a multiple number of times, however, after a predetermined number, a signal is sent requesting maintenance.

Filter system for electronic equipment enclosure

An equipment cabinet mounted on a concrete pad. The cabinet includes an upper equipment chamber, a lower back-up battery chamber and a heat exchanger. Ambient air is drawn across batteries in the lower chamber before being drawn into the heat exchanger to help cool electronic components in the upper chamber. Air in the upper chamber is separate circulated through the heat exchanger. A cold plate is placed beneath the batteries and is connected to a refrigeration system. A heating pad is located below the cold plate and is separated from the concrete pad by insulation. The cold plate and the heating pad are used to maintain the batteries at about 25&deg; C. regardless of ambient temperatures so as to extend the useful lives of the batteries.

Apparatus for cooling a battery in an outdoor equipment cabinet

A backup DC vent system for an equipment enclosure is disclosed. The system includes an air intake system which allows air to pass from the ambient environment through a battery compartment of the enclosure, through the floor and into the interior of the enclosure where components to be cooled are mounted. Internal air distribution is accomplished by an air distribution duct system. An air exhaust system is attached to a side of the enclosure and includes a door panel to selectively allow heated air flow from the enclosure interior, a fan mounted to a fan box which is mounted to the enclosure for sucking the air through the enclosure, and a cover to prevent wind driven rain water from impinging upon the fan or the interior of the enclosure.

Back-up DC vent system for equipment enclosure

A method which extends the useful life of a lead-acid type battery by applying conductive cooling or heating directly to the bottom surface of the battery to maintain the battery at a constant temperature of about 25&deg; C. regardless of the ambient temperature surrounding the battery. The method for thermally managing the battery comprises the steps of providing an equipment cabinet having an equipment chamber, providing the cabinet with a battery compartment exposed to ambient temperature changes, providing the battery, placing the battery in the battery compartment, providing a cold plate having a surface substantially coextensive with the surface of the battery, placing the surface of the cold plate in direct contact with the surface of the battery, providing a heating pad, placing the heating pad in direct contact with the cold plate, providing an insulation pad, and placing the insulation pad between the heating pad and a mounting for the cabinet.

Method for thermal management of a battery in an outdoor equipment cabinet

A direct flow impingement cooling system for heat generating electronic components is disclosed. The system includes a panel containing the components and the panel is formed of a main housing and a cover housing hinged to move between opened and closed positions. Three fans are positioned downstream of three spiral shaped air intake patterns, each having 18 cone-shaped cutouts. Downstream of the fans is a back plate with three aligned openings and side wall air exhaust slots. Downstream of the slots are upper and side exhaust openings, where all of the openings provide for low impedance air flow such that high heat removal from densely packed components is achieved.

Cooling system for electronic components in an equipment enclosure

An outdoor equipment cabinet enclosure designed to effectively dissipate heat generated by electrical equipment components housed therein includes a main interior section for housing active electronic components and a lower section configured to store banks of batteries for a stand-by power supply system with a lower wall separating the batteries from the electronic components in the main interior section. At least one heat exchanger is disposed in the main interior section and includes an inlet port and means for creating a circulating air flow path for interior air within the main interior section. An outdoor air flow path is defined by the lower wall and the upper surfaces of the batteries and at least one baffle is disposed within the outdoor air flow path which is configured to deflect outdoor air flowing across the upper surfaces of the batteries into the at least one heat exchanger. The at least one baffle is disposed at an acute angle to the upper surfaces of the batteries from a point adjacent inwardly disposed sides of the batteries.
