Systems and methods for providing oxygenated blood to a patient, e.g., in a patient with inadequate or failing circulation, including a dual lumen cannula system for drawing blood from the heart and returning oxygenated blood therein. Methods may feature inserting the dual lumen cannula system through the left ventricle such that intake aperture are positioned entirely within the left ventricle and the tip of the cannula is positioned in the aorta of the patients heart. By fluidly connecting the cannula to a cardiac assistance device, deoxygenated blood may be drained from the left ventricle through the intake apertures and oxygenated blood may be pumped into the aorta thorough the tip.

Dual lumen cannula system

A tubular pulsatile ventricular assist device (PVAD) system for providing forward flow of blood in a pulsatile, peristaltic, and non-hemolytic manner to help reduce the amount of blood clotting associated with current ventricular devices on the market. The system can encircle a portion of a blood vessel, and the system can sequentially apply a pressure through each port in a particular pre-determined patter so as to selectively occlude the lumen, thereby creating a pulsatile, peristaltic movement along a length of system. Said movement causes blood to flow through the portion of the blood vessel.

Pulsatile ventricular assist device

Systems and methods for digital reflex quantization and signature analysis. Movement of a stimulating device invoking a reflex response in an organism is captured as stimuli data. Electromyographic (EMG) of the reflex response is captured as EMG data. Movement resulting from the reflex response of a limb/appendage of the organism is captured as motion data. One or more of the stimuli data, the EMG data, and the motion data are analyzed to determine one or both of a motion signature and an EMG signature defining quantitative evaluation of the reflex response.

Digital reflex quantization and signature analysis

A lung function analysis system includes motion sensing devices each including accelerometers, gyros, battery, processor, and ireless transmitter, the processor configured to read motion data from the accelerometers and gyros and transmit the motion data over the wireless transmitter. The system includes a data collection device receiving the motion data and recording the motion data in a database; and a computing device with a lung function data analysis routine adapted to analyze the motion data to provide information useful in treating pulmonary disease. In embodiments, the lung function analysis routine includes a classifier trained on a database of motion data and diagnoses. In embodiments, the accelerometers and gyros are three-axis and/or the devices include electromyographic sensors. In embodiments, the system includes remote sensors such as a stereo camera with or without markers, millimeter-wave radar, or an ultrasonic echolocation device. In embodiments the information produced may include FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC and FEF25/75.

Systems, devices, and methods for determining an overall motion and flexibility envelope

Electronic devices and systems that overcome the limitation of stiffness and rigidity generally associated with electronics and allow for delivery via minimally invasive or percutaneous access and delivery systems are described herein. The devices and systems are able to change in size, such as from a larger electronic construct to a smaller flowable configuration. The devices and systems are configured to open or reconfigure to return to the original size and spatial dimensions at the site. In another embodiment, the devices and systems begin as a plurality of discrete electrical elements in a flowable state, and change to a non-fluent state thereby forming an electrical construct. The electrical elements are able to communicate by direct contact with each other or near field inter-device communication means. This allows the electronic device or system to be applied, adhere and conform to the underlying surface.

Flowable electronics

Polymers having mechanical properties approaching or exceeding commercial elastomers and engineering thermoplastics, but improved biostability, are described herein. In one embodiment, the polymers have a hard segment containing one or more disulfoxide or disulfone moieties and a soft segment connected to the hard segment to form an elastomeric polymer. The polymer is resistant to oxidation and/or hydrolytic degradation, particularly in vivo, which allows for the use of these materials in implants/devices which are implanted for an extended period of time. The ratio or percentage by weight of soft segment to hard segment can be varied based on the physical and mechanical properties of the desired device.

Biostable segmented elastomers and thermoplastics and methods of making and using thereof

Materials and devices are provided for the sensing and manipulation of biomechanical and physiochemical properties of tissues or tissue surfaces. Examples of use include soft tissues such as skin or adipose tissues or more dense tissues such as muscle or heart or dense tissues such as bone. The materials and devices provide for in vivo measurements of biomechanical properties at the tissue surface, e.g. near surface regions of the epidermis or dermis or underlying structures. The devices can be non-invasive and/or non-destructive to the material and, especially for the biomaterials, can be biocompatible and/or biodegradable. The materials and devices can use ultrathin, stretchable networks of mechanical actuators and sensors constructed with nanoribbons of piezoelectric materials.

Systems, devices, and methods for contact measurement and modulation of material properties

A polymeric valve which may include a heart valve, and also may include a trileaflet heart valve includes a stent having a base and a plurality of outwardly extending posts from the base and equidistant from each other. A plurality of leaflets each connected to a corresponding one of the posts at one end, and each of the leaflets connected to the base. Each of the leaflets having an operative end opposite the end connected to the post, and the operative ends of the leaflets being biased in a closed position such that the operative ends abut each other. The operative ends are configured to rhythmically open and close in relation to each other, and the leaflets include multiple cross sectional thicknesses at different portions of the leaflets.

Polymeric heart valve

A closed-circuit heliox delivery system and methods for alleviating symptoms of COPD and related disorders are provided. The system is self-monitoring and can be used outside of a hospital environment. The system contains a gas supply fluidly connected to a breathing circuit. The breathing circuit contains an upper airway device, such as a mask. The system contains a sensor(s) and controller. The sensors measure parameters in the system, the ambient environment, or related to the physiological state of the user. The controller can adjust the system to maintain parameters within the device, i.e. pressure, temperature, humidity, within predetermined ranges. The controller can adjust the system to maintain a target physiological state of the user, i.e. target blood oxygen levels or Work of Breathing (WOB).

Virtual reality system and method improve clinical outcomes. The virtual reality system includes a virtual display device capable of providing virtual reality images to a patient; one or more actuators capable of providing physical experience to the patient; and a controller. The controller is capable of: automatically selecting a treatment model based upon one or both of (a) a received identity of a medical treatment applied to the patient and (b) a received identity of a targeted disease of the patient; and coordinating the virtual display device and the one or more actuators to provide a synchronized immersive virtual reality environment for the patient to experience based upon the treatment model.
