Ultrasonic transducers for use in time-of-flight flow measurement are made by clamping a conformal material between a face of a piezoelectric element and a housing so as to efficiently acoustically couple the piezoelectric element to a flowing fluid wetting the housing. Both in-line and probe sensing heads are described, where the in-line sensor heads make use of side-looking transducers. Acoustic isolation arrangements are used to ensure that the transducer transmits and receives acoustic energy in a single, well-defined direction. Various pre-loading arrangements, such as metal springs that can be set by driving a wedge between the spring and the housing, are used to controllably force the piezoelectric element toward the housing.

Ultrasonic transducer and flow sensor configuration

A significant problem in the flow probe art is that of accurately positioning a flow-sensing portion of the probe at a selected location within a pipe. Several arrangements are provided for determining the insertion depth of flow sensing probes, for measuring diameters of the pipes in which they are inserted, and for detecting the depth of those pipes. These generally involve adding to the flow probe a depth measurement device for generating an energetic beam that is reflected from the pipe or from an insertion fitting. One such sensor uses a phased array of piezoelectric element to serve both in a pulse-echo distance measurement device and in a time-of-flight flow measurement device.

A game simulator device permits the golf player to view a specific golf course or portion thereof on a television monitor and is provided with additional information relating to the lie of ball and its position in relation to the hole. The golfer then hits the ball in the normal manner, which ball is fixedly retained on a joystick apparatus, whereby in striking the ball the joystick transmits signals to a computer which generates graphic data relative to a golf course and converts the signal input to graphic display information relative to the new position or lie of the ball in relation to the hole on the golf course. The golf ball is mounted so that when struck, first and second signals for each of four degrees of movement are transmitted to the computer and correlated with the golf course data input. The device in one embodiment utilizes a video disc whereby the course layout is pictorially viewed on a television monitor in addition to graphic information, and the computer determines the pictorial scene to be displayed depending upon the location of the golf ball after being struck by the golfer. The device is useful to simulate other ball games, such as billiards, pool or croquet.

Golf game simulator device

A manned or remotely controlled submergible chamber or tool carrier is provided with tool connection and disconnection to the work arm at an underwater location. A plurality of tools are mounted in a rack and each tool may be selectively connected and disconnected to a hydraulic drive means at the outward end of the retractably extensible portion of the work arm. All tool changing operations are remotely controlled from within the chamber or a remote station, as the operator views the tool changing operation. This tool system permits continuity of work arm operations without the need for the chamber to surface for tool changing. This tool changing system is particularly useful in performing work functions on underwater wellheads.
