There is disclosed a system for sensing and controlling the mill load in a grinding mill. The system includes a load cell located in the region of the mill that is subjected to reaction axial thrust forces developed during mill operation. The load cell senses the thrust forces and provides output signals representative of the values of the thrust forces. The system further includes a load controller which is responsive to the output signals for determining the charge load of the mill and for providing control signals to the mill so as to control entry of materials into the mill.

Mill load sensing system

A grinding mill such as an autogenous mill or ball mill, having a large driving gear driven by two motors, wherein a soft start capability is provided by a clutch or clutches, is 'finger-printed' in relation to the reduction gear system in order to identify optimum conditions for locking up the drive to achieve substantially equal loading between the drive motors, and to diminish cyclic variations in loading between the motors.

Grinding mill control system

A rotatable drum apparatus for use with a drying kiln or a dry grinding mill has a large gear wheel secured to the periphery of the drum, the drum being heated. In order to minimize the generation of undue stresses between gear wheel and drum due to thermal gradients, the apparatus includes a stationary heat shield extending about the gear in thermal stabilizing relation therewith. The arrangement includes air pressurization within the shield and seal means between stationary and rotary components, to limit the loss of heated air from the enclosure, and to preclude the ingress of air and foreign particles into the enclosure.

Heated mill drive system

A grinding mill having heavy duty transmission including a hydraulic clutch is provided with an inching capability, a slow running capability, a braking capability and overload prevention, as well as synchronization capability.
