A container has an upper fluid receiving portion and a lower fluid discharge portion which is closed off at its bottom by a closure. In carrying out the method of the invention, a blood sampling from the umbilical cord of a newly born infant is taken by first clamping off a section of the cord. The clamped section is then separated from the main portion of the cord and deposited into the container. One of the clamps is then removed to permit the blood in the cord section to drain into the container. The drained blood is then transferred to a second container, which may comprise a test tube or syringe, through the fluid discharge portion of the container, this being achieved by either causing a needle attached to the container and sealed with a needle cover to penetrate the needle cover as well as the test tube cover, penetrating the closure with a needle if it be a diaphragm or the like or opening a valve at such closure by a mechanical actuation with the nose of a syringe. The needles employed are protected by shielding hoods to prevent accidental needle sticking.

Tubing through which fluid flow is to be regulated is placed in a regulating clamp wherein it is clamped between a roller wheel and a surface which is substantially parallel to the travel of the wheel. The surface has a variable cross-sectional area channel extending within or therealong. Flow rate through the tubing is changed by longitudinal adjustment of the position of the roller wheel, the ratio between the portion of the tubing which is clamped shut to that which is exposed to the channel, and consequently not being clamped, thereby being varied. A plurality of raised elements are formed in the surface and act to locally pinch or grip the tubing at discrete intervals thereby both improving the grip and lessening the creep of the tubing. The raised element which is most remote from the channel is substantially higher than the raised element closer to the channel to provide a more constant flow rate especially with thicker and harder walled tubing.

Clamp for regulating fluid flow through plastic tubing

Tubing through which fluid flow is to be regulated is placed in a regulating clamp wherein it is clamped between a movable roller wheel and a surface of the clamp. Flow rate through the tubing is changed as determined by longitudinal adjustment of the position of the roller wheel. A full shut-off of flow through the tubing at a particular shut-off zone of the roller clamp is assured by means of ledge elements extending from the sidewall of the housing. These ledge elements, so as to provide a transitional deformation, are located in spaced relation to the clamping surface and are configured monotonically to provide a transitional and monotonically configured deformation of the tubing to avoid accidental rupture thereof, at the same time fully confining the tubing to prevent the formation of lumens in the peripheral edge portions thereof. In addition, full shut-off of the edge portion of the tubing is assured for parallel acting roller clamps, throughout the travel range of the wheel, if so desired. For inclined ramp roller clamps, improved tube confinement is offered.

Shut-off mechanism for clamp for regulating flow through plastic tubing

Tubing through which fluid flow is to be regulated is placed in a regulating clamp wherein it is clamped between a roller wheel and a surface having a variable cross-sectional area channel extending therealong. This surface is parallel to the travel path of the wheel, and thus there is a constant separation distance between these two elements for all wheel positions. Flow rate through the tubing is changed by longitudinal adjustment of the position of the roller wheel, the ratio of the portion of the tubing which is clamped between the wheel and the surfact to that which is not clamped and over the channel thereby being varied. A plurality of ridge elements are formed in the surface and act to locally pinch or grip the tubing at discrete intervals, thereby substantially lessening creep of the plastic tubing. The edges of the roller wheel are undercut so as to form recessed shoulders which provides spaces into which the outer edges of the tubing can migrate, the width of the thus formed shoulders being sufficiently small so as to prevent the formation of a flow lumen in the edges of the tubing when the tubing is being clamped. Pinching action of the ridge elements combined with migration space provided by the recessed wheel shoulder portions for the edges of the tubing provide an improved minimization of flow rate change once the clamp has been set for the desired rate of flow. In addition, this combination of structure avoids increase in flow rate following a large tug on the tubing tending to cause the stretching thereof.
