An improved instrument for counting nanoparticles suspended in a gas, particularly in a combustion gas, incorporates a counter device such as a Condensation Particle Counter, incorporates a pre-treatment stage to remove substances which can cause nucleation and false results, comprising a flow through monolith carrying an oxidation catalyst and an absorber, wherein the monolith has a call density of no more than 400 cells per square inch and an open area of at least 80%.

An apparatus comprising a compression ignition engine and an exhaust system therefor comprising at least one exhaust system component for treating exhaust gas and means for generating an exotherm for heating the at least one exhaust system component, which exotherm generating means consisting essentially of a catalyst and means for injecting hydrocarbon into exhaust gas for combustion on the catalyst, which catalyst consisting essentially of both a palladium (Pd) component and a platinum (Pt) component, and an optional support material, disposed on a substrate monolith.

A method of making a filter for filtering particulate matter from exhaust gas emitted from a lean-burn internal combustion engine, which filter comprising a porous substrate having inlet surfaces and outlet surfaces, wherein the inlet surfaces are separated from the outlet surfaces by a porous structure containing pores of a first mean pore size, wherein the inlet surfaces comprise a bridge network comprising interconnected particles of refractory material over the pores of the porous structure, which method comprising the step of contacting inlet surfaces of the filter substrate with an aerosol comprising refractory material in dry powder form. The invention also relates to a filter obtainable by such method.

Diesel particulate filter

Methods and systems are provided for passive regeneration of a particulate matter filter coupled to a gasoline engine. During vehicle deceleration conditions, an engine is operated leaner than stoichiometry over two subsequent lean phases, including an initial longer and leaner phase followed by a shorter and less lean phase. By passively regenerating the filter using intermittent lean engine operation, engine performance can be improved.

Particulate matter retaining system

A diesel engine includes an exhaust system having a particulate filter made from a porous material having a mean pore diameter of from 5 &#x3bc;m to 40 &#x3bc;m, a porosity of at least 40% and a bulk volumetric heat capacity of at least 0.50 J cmKat 500&#xb0; C. The filter includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) located in a first catalyst zone on the front end of the filter and at least one catalyst zone located downstream thereof, for oxidizing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen monoxide. The engine includes engine management means, in use, to provide continuously or intermittently an exhaust gas having sufficient nitrogen oxides or hydrocarbon and/or an exhaust gas of sufficiently high temperature to combust particulate matter. The platinum group metal (PGM) loading in the first catalyst zone is greater than the total PGM loading in the at least one downstream catalyst zone.

Diesel engine and a catalysed filter therefor

A sterilant such as ozone used for large scale decontamination of, for example, a hospital room, may be destroyed and the room made safe, by passing the atmosphere in the room over a catalyst which is silver oxide in combination with titania. The catalyst may be readily regenerated and used again.

Catalysts

An apparatus for generating and collecting particulate matter derived from combusting a carbon-containing fuel in oxidizing gas includes a fuel burner housed in a container. The container has a gas inlet, a gas outlet; the gas outlet connects with a conduit for transporting the gas to atmosphere which is associated with means for forcing gas to flow from the gas inlet via the container and the conduit to atmosphere. Located within the conduit is a station for collecting particulate matter from gas flowing through the conduit. The gas flow-forcing means is controlled in response to a detected gas flow rate at the gas inlet to ensure the rate of gas flow at the gas inlet is maintained at a desired rate, thereby to promote particulate matter formation. A method for collecting particulate matter derived from combusting carbon-containing fuel employs the apparatus.

Particulate matter generator and collector

An exhaust system which has a catalysed soot filter (CSF), a control unit, and a catalyzed sensor. The exhaust system, controllable by the control unit, can increase hydrocarbon (HC) and/or carbon monoxide (CO) content in an exhaust gas flowing into the CSF resulting in combustion of the HC and/or CO in the CSF, a temperature increase of the CSF, and combustion of particulate matter collected on the CSF. The catalyzed sensor is disposed between an engine manifold and the CSF, and combusts CO and/or HC in the exhaust gas and inputs the control unit with a datum correlating with an enthalpy of combustion of HC and/or CO in the exhaust gas, thereby controlling the content of the combustible HC and/or CO in the exhaust gas flowing into the CSF. The catalysed sensor is the only catalysed component in the exhaust system disposed between the engine and the CSF.

A system for treating a gas stream containing nitrogen oxides (NO) and particulates flowing in the system comprises means for injecting a source of ammonia (NH) or urea (CO(NH)) into a flowing exhaust gas upstream of a precious metal-free particulate trap, a selective catalytic reduction catalyst disposed downstream of the particulate trap and a source of ammonia or urea.

System for treating a gas stream

A system including a compression ignition engine operable in a first, normal running mode and operable in a second mode to produce an exhaust gas having an increased level of carbon monoxide (CO) relative to the exhaust gas produced in the first mode. The system, when in use, can switch engine operation between the two modes, and the system includes an exhaust system. The exhaust system includes a supported palladium (Pd) catalyst associated with at least one base metal promoter and an optionally supported platinum (Pt) catalyst associated with and/or downstream of the Pd catalyst wherein CO is oxidised by the supported Pd catalyst during second mode operation.

An exhaust system for a lean-burn internal combustion engine comprises a catalyst for oxidising carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons comprising a flow-through substrate monolith comprising a first platinum group metal (PGM) zone containing at least one PGM supported on a surface area-increasing washcoat component, a second PGM zone containing at least one PGM supported on a surface area-increasing washcoat component, a third PGM zone containing at least one PGM supported on a surface area-increasing washcoat component wherein both the PGM loading in the first PGM zone and the PGM loading in the third PGM zone is greater than the PGM loading in the second PGM zone and wherein the first PGM zone comprises a washcoat loading that is less than a washcoat loading of the third PGM zone.
