Lighting device arranged to be controlled via a wireless controller

An analogue dimmer driver for driving an LED lighting element () to generate coded light comprises an output component () which provides a primary current (i), a capacitor () connected to the output component, a switch (S) via which the lighting element is connectable to the current source in parallel with the capacitor. Switching is performed by periodically opening and closing the switch to code information into light generated by the lighting element. The output component has an input configured to receive a dimming signal. Responsive to a change in the dimming signal: i) the primary current is increased so as to increase the average power of the generated light and ii) the duty cycle of the switching is increased by an amount sufficient to prevent the peak level of the current though the lighting element when the switch is closed (i+i) from exceeding a predetermined level (i).

Driving a lighting element

An apparatus for reading out information from an information carrier includes a reading unit for reading out user information and access information from the information carrier. The user information are stored in a first region of the information carrier and the access information are stored in a second region of the information carrier. The apparatus further includes an access controller for providing access to the user information in dependence on the access information. The access information are stored in a first portion of the second region, and the dummy information are stored in a second portion of the second region according to a similar format as used for storing the access information.

A method of encoding user data into codevectors of an error correcting code, includes generating a first block of data symbols including user data symbols and dummy data symbols; encoding the first block using an ECC encoder to obtain a codeword comprising the first block of data symbols and a second block of parity symbols; and generating a codevector by selecting a user data portion of the user data symbols from the first block and a parity portion of the parity symbols from the second block. The sum of a number of the user data portion and a number of the parity portion is smaller than the sum of a number of the user data symbols and a number of the parity symbols of the second block.

An information carrier for holding user information, the information carrier comprising access information in the form of access information bits for accessing the user information, the access information bits being stored on the information carrier in a variation of a parameter, which variation is detectable by integration detection. The access information bits are scrambled according to a pre-determined scrambling method. By scrambling the access information bits according to a pre-determined scrambling method, detection of the access information is not possible as long as the scrambling method is not known. Using the integration detection technique, the only way to obtain the access information is by knowing how the signal obtained after reading-out the area comprising the access information bits must be processed. In this way illegal retrieval of the user information is further prevented.

The invention relates to a method of encoding user data into codevectors and to a corresponding method of decoding codevectors into user data. In order to be able to use the same ECC decoder for decoding of more than one type of data a method of encoding is proposed comprising the steps of:

Method of encoding and decoding

An apparatus for accessing an information carrier for holding user information includes access information for accessing the user information, the access information being stored in a pre-determined first region on the information carrier. The information carrier further includes at least one further region different from the first region, the further region comprising dummy information.

A data storage and replay device uses measurements of the evolution of performance of the storage medium (typically a flash memory circuit) to predict an error rate of retrieval from a region of the storage medium. The prediction is used as a basis for dynamically selecting an ECC for encoding the data prior to storage of the data. The ECC is selected from a plurality of available ECC's so that a fastest encodable ECC is selected that is predicted to produce no more than a predetermined post-decoding error rate given the information. On decoding the data, which is typically audio or video data, is decoded and replayed at a predetermined speed. In another embodiment, the data stored using a plurality of ECC's together and an ECC is selected dynamically for decoding, so that an output data rate can be maximized or power consumption on replay can be minimized.

A first block of data symbols is generated by arranging a predetermined number of user data symbols and a predetermined number of dummy data symbols in a predetermined order. The invention relates to method of encoding address words (a) comprising address symbols (a, a, . . . a) into codewords (c) of a code (C) for providing an enhanced error correction capability if at least one information symbol (m) of information words (m) is known a priori to a decoder decoding received, possibly mutilated codewords (r). In order to design a code of which the correction power is enhanced if some information symbols are known to the decoder prior to decoding it is proposed according to the invention that the address words (a) are encoded into information words (m) such that that address words comprising addresses being close to each other share a plurality of information symbols and that said information words (m) are encoded into codewords (c) using a generator matrix (G) which is selected such that the minimum Hamming distance of at least one subcode (C') of said code (C) is larger than the minimum Hamming distance of said code (C) and that a subcode generator matrix (G&#x2032;) of said subcode (C&#x2032;) derives from said generator matrix (G) of said code (C) by omitting the at least one row from said generator matrix (G) corresponding to said at least one a priori known information symbol (m).

Enhanced coding for informed decoders

An apparatus and method for error correction encoding a datastream of information into blocks of error correction encoded information. An input terminal receives the datastream. An error correction encoding unit performs an error correction encoding on portions of the datastream. A block of error correction encoded information includes n sync blocks, each sync block including a sync word and a portion of the error correction encoded information, where n exceeds 3. An output terminal supplies the blocks of error correction encoded information. The error correction encoding unit supplies one of m mutually different sync words to each n sync block, such that the sequence of two sync words of corresponding two sync blocks of the n sync blocks is unique with respect to the bit patterns within the two sync words, m satisfying 2<m<n.
