A method for synthesizing regioregular polyesters, starting from asymmetric diols, may provide the polymer ordered structure and advantageous physical-chemical properties. Such methods can make it is possible to obtain regioregular polyesters having high glass transition temperatures Tand crystalline properties. In the case in which the asymmetric diols are used in a pure enantiomeric form, with respect to the chiral carbon bound to the secondary hydroxyl, through the above-mentioned method it is possible to obtain regioregular and stereoregular polyesters, which may have thermal and crystalline properties further ameliorative with respect to non-chiral regioregular polymers.

Bio-based terephthalic acid (bio-TPA), bio-based dimethyl terephthalate (bio-DMT), and bio-based polyesters, which are produced from a biomass containing a terpene or terpenoid, such as limonene are described, as well as the process of making these products. A sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate is described which is produced by melt synthesis. A dihydroxy compound is reacted with a sulfobenzoic acid salt, then with an activated carbonate. The method results in a sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate which has a high percentage of sulfonated end groups, is soluble, and is transparent.

The structural units derived from the diacid are present in a molar excess of from about 10% to about 40% based on a ratio of moles of diacid-derived structural units to moles of diol-derived structural units present in the oligomeric polyester composition. The oligomeric polyester composition is further characterized by the presence of at least some phenoxy end groups.

Polyesters are prepared by the reaction of a dicarboxylic acid, preferably an aromatic acid such as terephthalic acid, or an ester or ester-forming derivative thereof with a dihydroxy compound such as 1,4-butanediol in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising the combination of a titanium-based compound such as tetra-n-butyl titanate, a zirconium-based compound such as zirconium tetrakis(2,4-pentanedionate) and a phosphate-forming compound such as sodium dihydrogen phosphate. This catalyst composition affords polyesters having relatively low melt viscosities in short reaction times and does not produce an excessive level of undesirable reaction by-products.

A catalyst composition for use in the preparation of a polyester or copolyester is disclosed. The catalyst composition comprises the combination of (a) a titanium-based compound or zirconium-based compound, and (b) a lanthanide series compound or hafnium. Various titanium-based compounds and lanthanide-based compounds are described. Moreover, in some embodiments, the catalyst composition may further comprise a phosphate-forming compound. Another aspect of this invention is an improved method for preparing a polyester, based, for example, on the two-stage process of ester interchange and polycondensation.
