A method for operating an exhaust gas recirculation system using rationality diagnostics for an automobile vehicle includes: estimating an oxygen storage content (OSC) of a catalytic converter of a vehicle; comparing an amount of oxygen stored in the catalytic converter to an OSC threshold; initiating a closed oxygen storage control (COSC) event for a predetermined one of multiple cylinders of an engine of a vehicle if the OSC threshold is met or exceeded, the COSC event targeting a rich air-fuel equivalence ratio (EQR) for the predetermined one of the multiple cylinders; and directing a fuel injector communicating with the predetermined one of the multiple cylinders to operate the predetermined one of the multiple cylinders at the rich EQR.

A method of operating a dedicated-EGR engine includes providing a rich air-fuel mixture to a dedicated cylinder; combusting the rich air-fuel mixture in the dedicated cylinder; modeling the combustion of the rich air-fuel mixture in the dedicated cylinder; estimating the composition of the combustion products in the dedicated cylinder based on interpolation of chemical reaction models of stoichiometric and rich combustion. The method further includes mixing the combustion products from the dedicated cylinder with air to produce an intake mixture; estimating a mass fraction of reformate and a mass fraction of burned gas in the intake mixture; providing the intake mixture to the intake ports of all of the cylinders of the dedicated-EGR engine; combusting an air-fuel mixture in a non-dedicated cylinder of the engine; and controlling an engine control parameter based on the estimated mass fractions of reformate and burned gas in the intake mixture.

The first mass fraction calculating module, based on the mass flowrate of EGR, determines a first mass fraction of recirculated exhaust gas relative of a first gas charge for a first combustion event of the engine. The second mass fraction calculating module determines a second mass fraction of recirculated exhaust gas of a second gas charge for a second combustion event of the engine based on an average of the first mass fraction and one or more other values of the first mass fraction determined for other combustion events, respectively. The actuator control module selectively adjusts an engine operating parameter based on the second mass fraction.

A system includes a soot module, a coordinator module, a regeneration module, and actuator modules. The soot module determines a current amount of soot mass in a particulate filter of a gasoline engine, where the particulate filter is downstream from the gasoline engine and receives an exhaust gas from the gasoline engine. The coordinator module generates an enable signal, a torque reserve signal, and an equivalence ratio. The regeneration module, based on the current amount of soot mass and the enable signal, generates a regeneration signal to regenerate the particulate filter. The actuator modules, based on the regeneration signal, the torque reserve signal and the equivalence ratio, retard spark and increase an amount of air flow to the particulate filter. The actuators maintain a same amount of torque out of the gasoline engine during regeneration as output from the gasoline engine prior to the regeneration of the particulate filter.

An energy module determines an amount of energy consumed by an electric heater of a fuel vapor canister since an ignition system of the vehicle was last transitioned from OFF to ON. A heater control module selectively applies power to the electric heater of the fuel vapor canister and, based on at least one of the amount of energy consumed by the electric heater and a mass of fuel vapor that has flowed through the purge valve, selectively disconnects the electric heater from the power until after the ignition system is transitioned from ON to OFF.

A temperature difference module determines a temperature difference based on the temperature sum and a previous value of the temperature difference. A fuel control estimation module reduces fueling to injectors of an engine of the vehicle based on the purge flow.

A fuel control system of a vehicle includes an injection control module and a command module. The injection control module determines a first target amount of fuel for a combustion event of an engine. A command module selectively command the injection control module to provide two fuel injections when a torque request decreases. In response to the command, the injection control module: determines second and third target amounts of fuel based on the first target amount; provides a first fuel injection during the combustion event based on the second target amount; and provides a second fuel injection during a compression stroke of the combustion event based on the third target amount.
