A device includes a thermal mitigation system that operates to reduce performance of a component of the device to prevent the device from getting too hot. The system uses a combination of a time-based technique and a temperature-based technique to perform thermal mitigation. The time-based technique refers to using an indication of the device usage as well as the amount of current drawn by the device at any given time to predict an amount of time that the device is to run in a non-reduced performance mode before reaching a target temperature threshold, and an amount of time for the device to run in a reduced performance mode to cool down. The temperature-based technique refers to monitoring the temperature of the device (or a component of the device) and powering off the device in response to detecting that a monitored temperature exceeds a critical threshold temperature.

Time-based and temperature-based device thermal mitigation

Embedded electronics (,) are operated under normal operating conditions, with power being supplied to embedded electronics via a power source (,). Heat is generated via the normal operation of the embedded electronics (,), and a voltage (,) is generated via thermionic emission from the heat. The voltage (,) that is generated is supplied to the power source (,) to help power the embedded electronics (,).

Method and apparatus for utilizing heat dissipated from an electrical device

The present invention provides a fan (100) that includes a hub (102) and a plurality of blades (104). The hub (102) has a blade attachment surface (106) that extends around the circumference of the hub (102). The blades (104) extend from the blade attachment surface (106). Each of the blades (104) has a blade tip (108) distal from the blade attachment surface (106) and a chord length (110) defined as the width of the blade (104). Each blade (104) includes a hub chord length (112) defined as the chord length of the blade (104) at the blade attachment surface (106) and a tip chord length defined as the chord length at the blade tip (108). The relationship of the chord length to the blade radius is defined as the area bounded by the following equations:

The apparatus includes a flexible printed wiring device (18) having a region sized to receive the electronic component (10) and a channel (28) disposed within the flexible printed wiring device. The channel has an inlet end (32) and an outlet end (34) and has an orifice (36) disposed therein. The inlet end receives a fluid, the fluid is distributed to the orifice via the channel and the orifice directs the fluid toward the region, so that the fluid is in direct contact with the electronic component when the electronic component is disposed in the region.
