In an internal combustion engine with at least one injection device per cylinder for direct fuel injection into a combustion chamber, the injector nozzle is located in a top surface of the combustion chamber, which is formed in the cylinder head. In order to reduce the build-up of deposits and carbon residues in the region where the injection device enters the combustion chamber, the area around the injector nozzle is configured as a flow-directing surface for a swirl and/or tumble flow.

An internal combustion engine with a device for controlled recirculation of exhaust gas into intake ducts via an exhaust gas recirculation line connected to the engine's exhaust system. Rapid response behaviour is achieved by providing an exhaust gas recirculation port in each intake duct in the immediate vicinity of the cylinders, which port communicates with a distributing device supplied via an exhaust gas recirculation line, and by providing the distributing device with an adjusting element which is configured to jointly control the flow cross-sections of the exhaust gas recirculation ports.

In an internal combustion engine with spark ignition and one or more reciprocating pistons, with an ignition device positioned in a roof-shaped top face of the combustion chamber and at least one fuel delivery device for each cylinder for direct fuel delivery essentially in the direction of the ignition device, and with at least one intake port configured so as to generate a swirl movement, the piston exhibits an asymmetrically shaped piston recess whose walls are configured as arcuate flow guiding faces assisting the swirl movement of the cylinder charge. To obtain reliable ignition of the directly introduced fuel on the one hand and maximum liberty in designing the engine on the other hand, the proposal is put forward that the piston recess between opposite walls should essentially constitute an open channel of meander-shaped or S-shaped configuration in plan view, at least one end of the channel forming an inlet area into the recess, which starts at the piston rim.

In order to optimize combustion in a four-stroke spark-ignition engine with direct fuel injection, the conditions of charge flow are improved by providing the top surface of each piston with two longitudinal guiding ribs located at a distance from each other and a cross-guiding rib running transversely thereto, thus providing an H-shaped configuration.

In order to reduce No.sub.x and HC emissions during starting and warm-up of a throttled internal combustion spark-ignition engine with direct injection, the beginning of fuel injection into the combustion chamber is shifted into the compression phase, while the total air ratio .lambda. is 1 or slightly lean.

In an internal combustion engine with spark ignition and one or more reciprocating pistons, with an ignition device and at least one fuel delivery device for each cylinder, and with a combustion chamber bounded by a roof-shaped top face, the surface of the piston top is provided with an unsymmetrical, arched flow guiding rib assisting the swirl movement of the cylinder charge. The flow guiding rib is configured as an integral part of the piston top surface, which largely conforms to the roof-shaped top of the combustion chamber, and includes an essentially centrically positioned combustion chamber recess with an entrance area in close proximity of the fuel delivery device.

In order to optimize combustion in a four-stroke spark-ignition engine with direct fuel injection, the conditions of charge flow are improved by providing the top surface of each piston with an essentially T-shaped configuration of guiding ribs, i.e., a longitudinal rib extending transversely to the crankshaft axis running and a cross-rib running in the direction of the crankshaft axis.

A four-stroke internal combustion engine with a gabled combustion chamber d at least two intake valves and at least two intake conduits per cylinder, of which a first intake conduit is embodied as unthrottled and a second intake conduit has a throttle device. To attain a stable radial mixture layering, it is provided that the fuel injection valve is disposed in the second intake conduit, and the throttle device in the closed state produces a defined minimum flow rate of between about 5% and about 20%, preferably about 10%, of the maximum flow rate, and that viewed in the direction of the crankshaft axis the center line of the first intake conduit in the intake valve region has a greater radius of curvature than does the center line of the second intake conduit.

In order to optimize combustion in a four-stroke spark-ignition engine with direct fuel injection, the conditions of charge flow are improved by providing the top surface of each piston with an essentially U-shaped guiding rib, which is open towards the exhaust side of the combustion chamber, fuel injection taking place into the concave area inside the guiding rib. The nozzle opening of the fuel injection device as well as the ignition source are positioned in the area of the cylinder center, i.e., preferably on different sides of the longitudinal center plane of the engine.

A device for introducing fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, includes a unit for fuel delivery and an injection valve for withdrawing compressed gas from the cylinder and injecting the gas together with the delivered fuel into the cylinder, and a mixing space in the front part of the valve for the purpose of gas storage, the injection valve being provided with a valve for control of the gas exchange between the combustion chamber and the mixing space in the front part of the valve. To obtain reproducible operating conditions and an optimum closing time (E.sub.0) for the injection valve, the mixing space is connected to one or more sensor elements for measuring the pressure and/or temperature of the mixing space, and that the valve is closed in dependence on the physical quantity measured by the at least one sensor element.

A combustion chamber formed by a recess in the piston of an internal combustion engine is divided by restrictions into two or more partial chambers. The ratio between the minimum distance in the area of the restrictions and the maximum distance in concave areas of the wall of the combustion chamber, as measured from the axis of the combustion chamber, is between 0.2 and 0.5. In the area of the minimum distance downstream of the restriction, the wall of each partial chamber is inclined relative to the axis of the combustion chamber, the inclination decreasing continuously in downstream direction. To achieve extremely lean operation with low exhaust emissions, the fuel injection device is located in a position eccentric to the center of the combustion chamber, and the ignition device is located approximately in the center of the combustion chamber. The restrictions of the piston recess are provided with guide faces located approximately parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber and directed towards the center of the combustion chamber, the smallest distance of these guide faces from the center of the combustion chamber being 0-0.2 times the piston diameter.

A device for introducing fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, includes an injection valve for withdrawing compressed gas from the cylinder and injecting the gas together with the fuel into the cylinder, a mixing chamber in the front part of the valve for the purpose of gas storage and into which mixing chamber fuel is introduced via one or more flow passages opening into the mixing chamber, the injection valve being provided with a lifting valve for control of the gas exchange between the combustion chamber and the mixing chamber in the front part of the valve, and an orifice where the flow passage opens into the mixing chamber located in the area of the seat of the lifting valve. To improve mixture preparation in the mixing chamber the fuel flow passage is constituted, at least in part, by a longitudinal bore in the valve stem of the lifting valve, the fuel being introduced into the valve stem in an area of the lifting valve distant from the valve seat, and the flow passage can be closed against the direction of fuel delivery by means of a check valve positioned in the area of the orifice opening into the mixing chamber.
