A cover for a foldable convertible top has a highly stretchable outer foil having an inner face, and a foam-plastic core layer bonded over the entire bonding-foil inner face and itself having an inner face. The outer foil can be a one-piece slush-molded foil or it can be highly stretchable and a thin thermoplastic bonding foil can be provided between the outer foil and the core layer.

Foldable convertible top and method of making same

A motor-vehicle soft top has a soft-top outer material having an inner edge, an outside face, and an inside face. A glass pane has an outer edge extending along the pane inner edge, an outside face, and an inside face. The inner material edge and outer pane edge overlap each other. A cast plastic frame element extends along the material inner edge and has an outside face bonded to the inside face of the material inner edge. The profile is generally S- or Z-section, having an inside flange carrying the outer pane edge, an outside flange, and a web extending between the flanges. An adhesive strip between an outside face of the inside flange and the inside face of the outer pane edge secures the pane in place.

Window mount for motor-vehicle soft top

A motor-vehicle convertible top has a foldable and waterproof cover having an inner face, a framework having a plurality of rigid struts juxtaposed with the inner face, a foam-plastic layer unitarily bonded to the inner face, connecting elements integral with the foam-plastic and secured to the struts so that the framework is connected via the elements to the cover. The connecting elements can be imbedded in the foam-plastic layer or unitarily formed with the foam-plastic layer. A roof liner is bonded to mounting strips, which are therin attatched to the struts.

Insulation-lined motor-vehicle convertible top with integral connecting elements

A motor-vehicle convertible top has a flexible and waterproof outer layer defining a roof having edges and an inner surface, a pair of sides joined at the edges to the roof, and a rear wall extending between the sides and a rear edge of the roof. A heat- and sound-insulating inner layer of a foamable plastic is bonded directly to the inner surface of the roof and inner surfaces of the sides. A pair of reinforcing bands extending along the edges are fixed to the layers. A plurality of crosswise rigid reinforcing struts extend between the bands and secured to the inner layer. The outer layer has a textile inner surface to which the inner layer is directly bonded. The inner layer is molded in place in a closed mold under 140 bar to 150 bar pressure, so that it is integrally united with the outer layer. The inner layer is polyurethane and has a Shore D hardness of about 40 and a polyol:isocyanate ratio of about 100:38 by weight. Furthermore the inner layer has a thickness of between 2 mm and 6 mm. A roof liner is bonded to mounting strips, which are then attached to the struts.

Motor-vehicle convertible top

A motor-vehicle convertible top has a foldable and waterproof cover having an inner face, a framework having a plurality of rigid struts juxtaposed with the inner face and having ends at edges of the cover, reinforcing belts having outer faces provided at the strut ends with a directly bonded cushion layer engaging the cover inner face, and connecting elements securing the struts to the cover. The cushion layer is a foamed plastic bonded directly to the belt outer face. A foam-plastic insulating layer unitarily bonded to the inner face has a reduced thickness at the strut ends. A roof liner is bonded to mounting strips, which are therein attached to the struts.

Insulating layer secured to struts by connecting elements in a motor vehicle folding convertible top

An outside edge of a glass pane and a coextensive inside edge of a frame are connected together by a glass-mount assembly having a T-section outer seal strip fixed to an inner face of one of the edges and having an inwardly projecting T-leg and a U-section inner seal strip fixed to the other edge and forming an outwardly open groove snugly receiving the T-leg, and a plurality of screw fasteners each having a part bearing outward on the inner seal strip and a shank engaged in the T-leg of the inner seal strip. The outer strip is provided with a plurality of inwardly open threaded sleeves each receiving a respective one of the shanks. These sleeves can be part of one or more metal reinforcement profiles imbedded in the outer strip. Alternately the screw fasteners are self-tapping screws and the outer seal strip is formed with a plurality of inwardly open blind bores each receiving a respective one of the screws. Either way, the inner strip is formed with a plurality of counterbored through-going holes through each of which passes a respective one of the screws. The inner strip can be provided with an imbedded metallic reinforcement through which the screws pass. The outer-strip reinforcement is exposed at an inner face of the T-leg. In addition the inner-strip reinforcement is inwardly exposed and directly engaged by the screw parts, normally screw heads.
