Most processes currently being proposed and/or used for the production of lignin from kraft or soda black liquors are capable of producing two main types of lignin: high residual content (HRC) lignin and low residual content (LRC) lignin. Surprisingly, it was discovered that HRC lignin, is a suitable ingredient in alkaline adhesives, particularly wood adhesives of the phenolic type (e.g. resole resins). This biomaterial is environmentally green and remarkably low cost, which makes it an industrially viable material to be used as a novel and major ingredient in phenolic adhesives for the manufacture of exterior grade plywood, laminated veneer lumber, oriented strand board (OSB) and other wood products&#x2014;this was successfully demonstrated in a number of laboratory experiments as well as several different mill trials. The composition, preparation and application of such wood adhesives are hereby disclosed.

High residual content (HRC) kraft/soda lignin as an ingredient in wood adhesives

Disclosed herein are method to modify the lignin with particular fungal species, and procedure to synthesize phenolic adhesives with the modified lignin as raw materials, and the adhesives compositions and methods for making adhesive compositions, and methods for making lingo-cellulosic composites from renewable materials. Four fungi in examples are(Spreng.) Pat. (FTK 329A),(Bres.) Parmasto (FTK 332A),(Ellis & Everh.) Kotl. & Pouz. (FTK 76A) and(Pers.) Bondartsev (FTK 122B). Lignin used in examples are organosolv lignin, Kraft lignin, and ammonium lignosulfonate. The present invention includes methods to (1) modify of lignin with fungi; (2) in-situ polymerize modified lignin-phenol-formaldehyde to generate bio-modified lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesive in liquid form, and (3) manufacture composite panels with bio-modified lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resins.

Process for fungal modification of lignin and preparing wood adhesives with the modified lignin and wood composites made from such adhesives

This invention describes an adhesive composition that forms the basis of a heat-resistant, fire resistant, and water resistant polyurethane adhesive suitable for applications in the manufacture of wood products, and the method of making the adhesive. The wood finger-jointed studs produced using an adhesive derived from this invention can meet or exceed the fire rating of a period of 60 minutes according to ASTM E 119 and ASTM D 7374. The heat resistance of the adhesive is a result of incorporating thermally stable aromatic polyol molecules into the polymeric structures of the wood adhesive system, which is composed of the reaction products of a poly(methylene diphenyl diisocyanate), at least one of a polyether polyol and a polyester polyol; and the aromatic polyol that is a hydroxyl phenol in a preferred embodiment. Furthermore, this novel wood adhesive system possesses high water-resistance, making it suitable for the manufacture of highly durable engineered wood products. It is fast moisture-curable at ambient temperatures. It is also formaldehyde-free.

Heat-resistant structural wood adhesive compositions involving pMDI, polyol and aromatic polyols

The present invention provides methods to functionalize and solubilize WCNT with a phenolic polymer such as a lignin or a PF resin followed by in-situ integration of this functionalized CNT in the presence of formaldehyde and phenol and/or lignin to generate either CNT-reinforced phenol-formaldehyde polymer or CNT-reinforced lignin-phenol-formaldehyde polymer in either liquid or powder form suitable as an adhesive in the manufacture of a lignocellulosic composite material such as OSB and plywood.

Phenol-formaldehyde polymer with carbon nanotubes, a method of producing same, and products derived therefrom

A method for measuring bonding agent content and distribution in a composite product that includes bonding agent and cellulosic material. The method involves using a bonding agent that includes electronegative functional groups and an X-ray active cationic label bonded with the functional groups in the manufacture of the composite product. The cellulosic material is exposed to X-rays to generate a characteristic fluorescence signal from the label. The X-ray fluorescence of the label is measured to determine the amount and distribution of the label in the cellulosic material and thereby the amount and distribution of the bonding agent in the composite product. The present invention also provides a bonding agent composition useful for determining the distribution of the bonding agent in a composite product comprising a bonding agent containing electronegative functional groups and a label compound that includes positively charged ions to emit characteristic fluorescence when exposed to X-rays. The bonding agent and the label compound are homogeneously mixed.
