An exemplary compressor for a turbocharger includes a compressor wheel that includes first and second compressor faces oriented back-to-back and a bore for mounting the compressor wheel to a shaft along a rotational axis of the compressor wheel; and a compressor housing that includes a first air inlet oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction along the rotational axis to the first compressor face, a second air inlet positioned a distance radially from the rotational axis and oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction parallel to the rotational axis and radially toward the rotational axis to the second compressor face, and a single volute that receives compressed air from the first and second compressor faces.

High response compact turbocharger

An exemplary flow path for an electrically assisted turbocharger () includes a first opening to an air intake path () of an engine (), the first opening positioned downstream from a compressor () of the turbocharger (); a second opening to an exhaust path () of an engine (), the second opening positioned upstream from the turbine () of the turbocharger (); and a valve () controllable by a controller () wherein the controller () includes control logic for controlling the valve () and for controlling an electric motor () of the electrically assisted turbocharger (). Various other exemplary devices, methods, systems, etc., are also disclosed.

Use of compressor to turbine bypass for electric boosting system

Turbochargers of this invention comprise a turbine housing and a turbine wheel rotatably disposed therein. A center housing is connected to the turbine housing, and a compressor housing is attached to the center housing. A compressor is rotatably disposed within the compressor housing, and comprises two impellers placed in back-to-back orientation. A movable member is disposed within the compressor housing to downstream of the compressor to control the flow of air within the compressor housing. The position of the movable member can be operated to control the amount of pressurized air that is produced by one of the compressor impellers to provide enhanced compressor operating efficiency throughout the operating range and mass flow requirements of the engine.

High response, compact turbocharger

Cylinders of an internal combustion engine are provided with an exhaust port that is opened when the piston approaches bottom dead center. Exhaust in the cylinder at the end of the power stroke flows to an EGR tank for containment and cooling. During the intake stroke as the piston approaches bottom dead center, the exhaust port is reopened allowing gas from the EGR tank to flow into the cylinder as a portion of the charge prior to compression. Alternatively, the exhaust port on a first cylinder is connected to the exhaust port on a second cylinder to allow exhaust gas from the power stroke on the first cylinder to flow into the intake stroke on the second cylinder. Pulsed turbocharger systems comprise an internal combustion engine comprising a piston cylinder and a piston slidably disposed within the cylinder. The cylinder includes an exhaust gas port that is disposed through a wall section of the cylinder. The exhaust gas port is positioned near a bottom portion of the cylinder such that: (1) an opening of the port is exposed when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke within the cylinder; and (2) an opening of the port is covered when the piston is moved towards the top of its stroke. A turbocharger that is connected to the engine and comprises a turbine wheel that is in exhaust gas flow communication with the exhaust gas port. Pulsed exhaust gas exits the piston cylinder through the exhaust port, when the piston is near a bottom portion of its work stroke. This pulsed exhaust gas is directed to the turbine wheel to cause the turbocharger to produce boost air for directing to the engine.
