The invention relates to a method for producing eicosapentanoic acid, docosapentanoic acid and/or docohexanoic acid in transgenic plants. According to said method, the plant is provided with at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;6 desaturase activity, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;6 elongase activity, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 desaturase activity, and at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 elongase activity, the nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 elongase activity being modified in relation to the nucleic acid sequence in the organism from which the sequence originates, such that it is adapted to the codon use in at least one type of plant. For the production of docosahexanoic acid, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;4 desaturase activity is also introduced into the plant.

Oils, lipids and fatty acids produced in transgenicplant

The invention relates to a method for producing eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid and/or docohexanoic acid in transgenic plants. According to said method, the plant is provided with at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;6 desaturase activity, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;6 elongase activity, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 desaturase activity, and at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 elongase activity, the nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;5 elongase activity being modified in relation to the nucleic acid sequence in the organism from which the sequence originates, such that it is adapted to the codon use in at least one type of plant. For the production of docosahexanoic acid, at least one nucleic acid sequence coding for a polypeptide with a &#x394;4 desaturase activity is also introduced into the plant.

Method for producing polyunsaturated fatty acids

The present invention is directed to promoters of flax conlinin and &#x3c9;-3 desaturase genes. The promoters guide high levels of the expression exclusively in flax developing seeds. This specific expression pattern concomitant with the biosynthesis of storage lipids and proteins make these promoters particularly useful for seed-specific modification of fatty acid and protein compositions in plant seeds.

The present invention relates to a process for producing arachidonic acid and/or eicosapentaenoic acid in transgenic useful plants by introducing into the plant nucleic acids coding for polypeptides having &#x394;6-desaturase, &#x394;6-elongase or &#x394;5-desaturase activity. Furthermore, a gene coding for an &#x3c9;3-desaturase is advantageously expressed in said useful plants. In another advantageous embodiment of the process, further nucleic acid sequences coding for polypeptides of fatty acid or lipid metabolism biosynthesis may be expressed in the plants. Particularly advantageous nucleic acid sequences here are those coding for a &#x394;8-desaturase, &#x394;12-desaturase, &#x394;15-desaturase, &#x394;4-desaturase, &#x394;9-elongase and/or &#x394;5-elongase activity. The invention further relates to the use of the oils, lipids and/or fatty acids produced in the process according to the invention in feedstuffs or foodstuffs, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals.
