In a method for preparing and/or coating the surfaces of metallic hollow structural elements that have at least two connection openings between their outer and inner surfaces, first and second reaction gas mixtures (I, II) are prepared by reaction gas sources for treating the outer and inner surfaces of the hollow structural elements. The first reaction gas mixture (I) is guided over the outer surfaces and thereafter over the inner surfaces of the structural elements, and then the second reaction gas mixture (II) is guided over the inner surfaces and thereafter over the outer surfaces of the structural elements. An apparatus for carrying out the method includes a reaction vessel enclosing an outer reaction space, a central holding pipe arranged in the reaction vessel and enclosing an inner space, and hollow support arms removably attached on the holding pipe to extend radially outwardly therefrom. Each structural element is mounted on a hollow support arm so that one of the connection openings communicates with the inner space through the hollow support arm and the other one of the connection openings communicates with the outer reaction space.

In a method for coating workpieces with a coating material by a gas phase diffusion coating process, the coating material is conveyed in the form of a metal halide compound from a coating material source (9A, 9B, 9C) to the workpiece (7) by means of a metal halide gas circulation flow (F). A protective coating is applied on a local region of a surface of a component on which direct deposit of a uniform coating of protective material is impeded due to a complex shape of the region to be covered or inaccessibility or inability to apply a uniform deposition or electrical field therefor. The coating is formed by a foil having a solder backing layer with a thin layer of uniform thickness of the protective material electrolytically deposited on the backing layer, the foil being cut to size corresponding to an area of the local region of the component to be protected. The cut to size foil is positioned and held on the local region of the component to be protected; and fixed in place by melting the solder to fuse the foil to the component and cover the local region.

A process for the removal of organic materials from the surfaces of drive components, particularly for the removal of meltable organic coatings, fillings or damping materials. The organic material is first melted in a bath of the same or similar organic material and an adhering residual film is diluted and stripped off from the preheated drive component by applying tempered oil thereto. After this, a diluting and striping off of a material film, which essentially consists of oil molecules still adhering to the surface, is conducted by applying an organic cleaning agent, which is free of fluorochlorohydrocarbons and chlorohydrocarbons. Then a post-treatment of the surfaces of the drive component is effected by one or more steps of applying diluted cleaning solutions with intermediate rinsing and/or drying steps, in which the cleaning solutions are increasingly diluted stepwise.

Inner and outer surfaces of structural components are aluminized by an aluminum gas diffusion process. For this purpose a gas mixture of a halogenous gas, aluminum monohalide gas, hydrogen, and negligible proportions of aluminum trihalide gas is caused to flow over the outer and inner surfaces of the component to be coated. The process is performed in a vessel in which at least two different temperature zones are maintained for keeping one or more aluminum sources at a higher temperature than the component to be coated. A process for vapor depositing a metallic interlayer on the surface of a metal component, for example, by sputtering and thereafter depositing an aluminum diffusion coating on the interlayer. The metallic interlayer is vapor deposited on the surface of the component in a noble gas atmosphere, more than one-half of which, in per cent by weight, is composed of noble gases which are heavier than argon. Advantageously, the noble gases can be krypton or xenon. The process can be used with particular advantage for applying protective aluminum diffusion coatings on turbine blades.

The water-soluble substance is dissolved by immersing the structural part or substrate in an electrolytic or electroless deposition bath, and a metal matrix is deposited onto the structural part or substrate to incorporate the dispersed particles, fibers, felt, mat or woven fabrics in the matrix as a composite coating.

An etch solution for the removal of metallic layers, which provide protection against corrosion by hot gases, and of deposits resulting from hot gas reactions on turbine blades in power units comprising a salt solution and an inhibitor. The salt solution consists of a hydrogen sulfate in the amount of 5 to 45% by weight and the inhibitor is present in the amount of 0.5 to 10% by weight. The total amount of the hydrogen sulfate and inhibitor is present with at least 50% by weight of water based on the total etch solution. Using this etch solution, layers preferably comprising MCrAlY are removed from turbine blades comprised of alloys of Ti, Co or Ni.

A method for producing a galvanically deposited protection layer against hot gas corrosion of a structural component, involves immersing the structural component in an electrolytic bath of a cobalt and/or nickel matrix material. Alloying chromium and/or aluminum particles are suspended in the electrolytic bath. Gas bubbles are mixed into the electrolytic bath, and the immersed structural component is rotated in the bath while the galvanic deposition or coating takes place. The bath is stationary and rotation of the structural component takes place about a substantially horizontal axis.

Galvanically or electrolytically deposited protective coatings are produced on structural components such as gas turbine blades by suspending in the electrolytic solution a metal alloy powder of which the particles have a spherical configuration and a passivated surface. The concentration of the particles in the electrolyte is preferably smaller than 100 g/l, whereby a high insertion rate of up to 45% by volume has been achieved at relatively low costs and small technical efforts.

Paired metal force-transmitting machine elements are protected against fretting corrosion under dynamic or oscillating load or stress conditions by a protection layer between pairing surfaces, whereby a direct contact between these pairing or junction surfaces is avoided. The protection layer is a material having a different composition than that of the machine elements. The protection layer is applied between the paired surfaces and to at least one of the paired surfaces. The protection layer has a different crystal structure and a lower hardness than titanium material of which the machine elements are made. The protection layer is galvanically applied and is advantageously of copper, aluminum or silver, whereby the thickness is 5-50 .mu.m. In this way the fretting fatigue durability of machine elements made completely or partially of titanium materials is greatly improved in a simple manner.
