State-of-the-art electronic structure calculations yield results consistent with the observed compound SiLiMg and provide likelihood of the availability of IrLiMg and RhLiMg. Similar calculations provide likelihood of the availability of YLiMgH, ZrLiMgH, NbLiMgH, MoLiMgH, TcLiMgH, RuLiMgH, RhLiMgH, LaLiMgH, CeLiMgH, CeLiMgH, PrLiMgH, NdLiMgH, PmLiMgH, SmLiMgH, EuLiMgH, GdLiMgH, TbLiMgH, DyLiMgH, HoLiMgH, ErLiMgH, TmLiMgH, YbLiMgH, LuLiMgH, HfLiMgH, TaLiMgH, ReLiMgH, OsLiMgH, and IrLiMgH(here n is an integer having a value in a particular compound of 4-7) as solid hydrides for the storage and release of hydrogen. Different hydrogen contents may be obtained in compounds having the same XLiMg crystal structures. These materials offer utility for hydrogen storage systems.

Hydrogen storage mixed gas system method

The invention provides a method of reversibly storing hydrogen at industrially practicable temperature and pressure conditions. A stable hydrogen storage hydride is mixed with a destabilizing hydride. The stable hydride is capable of releasing hydrogen at a first energy level. When the stable hydride is in the presence of the destabilizing hydride, the stable hydride releases hydrogen at a second energy level. The second energy level is significantly reduced from the first energy level.

In one aspect, the invention provides a hydrogen storage composition having a hydrogenated state and a dehydrogenated state. In the hydrogenated state, such composition comprises an amide and a hydride. In a dehydrogenated state, the composition comprises an imide.

In one aspect, the invention provides a novel quaternary hydrogen storage composition having a hydrogenated state and a dehydrogenated state. Mixed hydrogen generation material

The dispersion of metal-element containing additives with hydrogen storage particles of the family of hydrogen-rich materials, M'M&#x2033;NHas specified herein, markedly lowers the temperature at which hydrogen is removed from the particles. For example, the dispersion of additives containing one or more of iron, nickel, palladium, or platinum with particles of LiBNHprovides a composition from which hydrogen is readily removed by heating. Use of these metals as their chloride salts makes particularly effective hydrogen release additives.

Hydrogen generation material

A low porosity, strong, composite magnetostrictive coating is formed on a substrate by low temperature, high velocity spraying of a particulate mixture of a magnetostrictive REFe composition and a strong metallic matrix material. The practice is particularly useful for forming circumferential bands of composite magnetostrictive material on a round shaft such as an automobile steering column. An example of a composite material is the magnetostrictive SmFe compound and iron or copper as the strengthening matrix material.

A method is disclosed for equalizing the electrical resistance of two or more magnetoresistor sensor elements positioned on a permanent magnet in a sensor assembly. This invention provides an improvement to magnetostrictive torque sensors giving an output signal indicative of the torque applied about the axis of a shaft where the shaft includes a magnetostrictive ring, attached to or formed as a part of the shaft so that the torque applied to the shaft is applied proportionally to the ring, and the ring consists essentially of novel composites consisting of magnetically hard and highly magnetostrictive rare earth (iron).sub.2 binary compound particles embedded in Cu, Fe, or other suitable metals.

Magnetostrictive torque sensor utilizing RFe.sub.2 -based composite

This invention relates to an apparatus for sensing a vehicle steering wheel position. A permanent magnet target wheel having a global axial magnetic field normal to a first surface is attached to a steering shaft which is rotated by the steering wheel. Multiple regions equally spaced along a common radius on the first surface are magnetically altered and sensed by magnetically responsive sensors positioned adjacent the first radius. A single region positioned within a finite radius along a second radius on the first surface is magnetically altered and sensed by a magnetically responsive sensor positioned adjacent the second radius. The magnetic sensors are responsive to passage of the multiple regions and single region as the target wheel is rotated. Detection of each of the multiple regions corresponds to rotation of the target wheel by an incremental number of degrees. Detection of the single region corresponds to a target wheel position within a predetermined angular range, referred to as the center position. A turn counter is utilized to determine which of the center positions corresponds to the steering wheel neutral position.

Vehicle steering wheel position sensing apparatus

Fine line superconductors of yttrium-barium-copper were formed on &lt;100&gt; strontium titanate substrates by the completely non-vacuum techniques of metallo-organic deposition in selective laser pyrolysis. Lines 125 micrometers wide were written in a film of metal neodecanoates, using an argon laser, prior to complete pyrolysis. An organic dye which absorbs selective laser light wavelengths, is added to the metallo-organic solution comprising the metal neodecanoates prior to laser exposure, so as to enhance absorption of the laser light at the regions of the metallo-organic film which are subsequently exposed to the laser light. The increased light absorbance at the exposed regions, results in at least partial pyrolysis of the exposed metal neodecanoates. Regions of the metallo-organic film not exposed to laser pyrolysis is developed away using a xylene wash. Subsequent complete pyrolysis of the metal neodecanoates and rapid thermal annealing produced lines having superconducting onsets above 90 K and zero resistance at 40 K.

Selective laser pyrolysis of metallo-organics as a method of forming

A glass substrate having an electrically conductive, abrasion-resistant, wire pattern embedded in the surface thereof made by grooving the surface of the glass, electrolytically codepositing metal and glass particles in the groove, and firing the composite to fuse the glass particles to themselves and to the glass substrate for retaining the electrodeposited metal in the groove and providing abrasion resistance thereto.
