A method and apparatus are disclosed for operating an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). The method includes the steps of receiving access to a virtualized operating system and ATM application at an ATM and performing a customer transaction at the ATM using the access to the virtualized operating system and ATM application. A recovery program may be provided to control the ATM if a communication link fails between the ATM and a server providing the access.

Virtualized ATM

A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing information to a customer of a Self-Service Terminal (SST) such as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). The method includes the steps of updating storage data of a Near Field Communication (NFC) device at an SST and reading data associated with the storage data from the NFC device via a mobile terminal of a customer at the SST.

Information provision

A computing device including a graphical user interface is described. The computing device comprises: a display; a display controller; and a graphical user interface controller. The graphical user interface controller is arranged to create a first and second cluster of associated menu options. The first cluster of associated menu options comprises: a first principal menu option and at least one first sub-ordinate menu option, smaller than the first principal menu option, and located on the periphery of the first principal menu option. The second cluster of associated menu options comprises: a second principal menu option and at least one second sub-ordinate menu option smaller than the second principal menu option, and located on the periphery of the second principal menu option. The graphical user interface controller is also arranged to enable a user (a) to decouple the first sub-ordinate menu option from the first principal menu option and (b) to couple the decoupled the first sub-ordinate menu option to the second principal menu option.

User interface for a computing device

A customer's mobile device comprises a camera and a processor. The camera is used to scan a two-dimensional barcode which has encoded within it transaction details and ancillary information relating to purchases made by a customer in their receipted transaction.

A multiple-display device comprises a front and a rear display. The front display includes a front image area facing a front direction. The rear display is mounted opposite the front display and includes a rear image area facing a rear direction, opposite the front direction. A display controller is provided for controlling the front and rear image areas to render images thereon, including a transfer port image on the front image area. A touch-sensitive panel is mounted on the front display in registration with the front image area. A panel controller is operable to detect a rendered element on the front image area being dragged by a user to the transfer port image and in response thereto to inform the display controller, so that the display controller can instantiate the rendered element on the rear image area.

Multiple-display device

A method of operating a self service terminal (SST) () is described, in which the SST () detects characteristics of a mobile computing device held by a user (), and configures the user interface dependent on the detected characteristics. The characteristics may include features of the mobile device, such as communication facilities, or may include user identification information. Where the user is identified, a user profile may be retrieved from a remote SST operator (). Certain embodiments of the invention may detect devices held by a second or subsequent user (), and retrieve the relevant user profile prior to the second user () interacting with the SST ().

Self service terminal

An advertising terminal () and a network of advertising terminals are described. The advertising terminal may be an ATM (). The ATM () comprises a transceiver () for wireless communication with portable devices () in the vicinity of the ATM (). The ATM () is operable to create a profile of persons in the vicinity of the ATM () by detecting portable devices such as PDAs () and cellphones () that have a wireless communications facility () and identifying the owners of the portable devices. The ATM is also operable to display an advertisement appropriate for the created profile of persons.

Advertising terminal

A method of providing information to a user at a remote terminal () is described. The method comprises the steps of: receiving from the remote terminal () status information relating to an irregularity in the remote terminal; determining from the status information what action may be required to resolve the irregularity; identifying an agent capable of performing the action; transmitting the status information to a portable device () associated with the agent to inform the agent of the irregularity; and allowing the portable device () to access a repository containing operational information for presentation to the agent.

Method of providing information

A biometric system () for assisting a user in providing a biometric reading is described. The system () comprises: a biometric capture unit () for capturing biometric data from a user; and feedback means () for providing the user with an indication of the extent to which a measurement has been captured. The feedback means () may be implemented by a display, a loudspeaker (), or both. The system may also include anonymizing means () for providing the feedback means () with an anonymized version of the data measured from the biometric capture unit ().

Biometric system

A module (), a terminal () including the module, and a system () including the terminal (), are described. The module may be a printer module () comprising a print engine (), a microcontroller (), and a wireless receiver (), such as a wireless modem, so that the module () is operable to receive data from a remote server () and to print the received data. The module () also includes a coupler (or) for directing data received from the wireless modem () to the microcontroller () and for directing data from the terminal () to the microcontroller (). A method of printing tickets at a terminal () and a method of retro-fitting a self-service terminal () are also described.

Module

A self-service terminal that is adapted to: receive a text message, in particular an SMS message, from a mobile telecommunications device; interpret the received text message, and provide information or a service in response to the received text message. Preferably, the information is printed out and the print out is provided to the customer.

An automated teller machine () comprises a fascia () having a check entry/exit slot (), and a check processing module () for processing checks entered via the slot (). The terminal () includes a control means (), biometric data capture means (), a printer () and a check transport mechanism () for transporting checks between the slot () and the printer (). The control means is arranged to cause the printer () to print a representation of a biometric characteristic of a user onto a check during an attempt to deposit the check in the terminal ().
