Thermal management systems include an open circuit refrigeration system featuring a receiver configurable to store a refrigerant fluid, an evaporator configurable to extract heat from a heat load when the heat load contacts the evaporator, and an exhaust line, where the receiver, the evaporator, and the exhaust line are connected to form a refrigerant fluid flow path, and a first control device configurable to control a vapor quality of the refrigerant fluid at an outlet of the evaporator along the refrigerant fluid flow path.

Thermal management systems

The present disclosure relates more particularly to active optical fibers, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources using such active optical fibers, and imaging and detection systems and methods using such ASE sources. In one aspect, the disclosure provides an active optical fiber that includes a rare earth-doped gain core configured to emit radiation at at least a peak wavelength emitted wavelength when pumped with pump radiation having a pump wavelength; a pump core surrounding the gain core; and a cladding surrounding the pump core, wherein the value M=16R(NA)/&#x3bb;in which R is the gain core radius, NA is the active optical fiber numerical aperture, and &#x3bb; is the peak emitted wavelength, is at least 50, or at least 100. The present disclosure also provides an optical source that includes the optical fiber coupled to a pump source.

Optical fiber system having a remote power module

An optical fiber comprising a multimode glass core having a diameter of at least 250 microns and an index of refraction and a polymer cladding having a thickness and contactingly surrounding a glass portion of the fiber so as to define an interface between the glass portion and the polymer cladding. The polymer cladding can have a first index of refraction that is less than the index of refraction. The fiber can comprise a density of less than 0.25 non-conforming regions having a diameter of 25 microns or greater per millimeter of length along the fiber, where each of the non-conforming regions is a region visible to the human eye under an optical microscope and having at least a portion thereof within a selected distance of the interface. The selected distance can be less than or equal to the thickness of the polymer cladding. The optical microscope can have a total magnification of about 200. The polymer cladding can be applied to at least a part of the optical fiber in at least a class 1000 environment. Methods of using optical fibers, including receiving with an optical fiber optical energy from a source and guiding the optical energy with the optical fiber, wherein the optical energy comprises at least one of 1) pulses each comprising a peak power of at least 10 kW, 2) an average power of at least 50 Watts, or 3) an average power density of at least 2.9 kW/cm.

Optical fiber having reduced defect density

A method of making an optical fiber article can include providing an optical fiber including at least a core; providing a preform; and subsequent to the foregoing providing of the optical fiber and the preform, drawing the preform so as to dispose a region about the optical fiber. An optical fiber article can include a core; a pump cladding disposed about the core, the pump cladding for propagating pump light; and a second cladding disposed about the pump cladding, where the second cladding can provide a photonic bandgap for tending to confine pump light to a region about which the second cladding is disposed. The second cladding can comprise a plurality of layers including a first layer having a different optical property than a second layer, and the plurality of layers can be arranged as to provide the photonic bandgap effect.

Optical fiber article and methods of making

An optical fiber coupler can include at least a first input optical fiber and an output optical fiber, where the first input optical fiber can comprise an antiguiding core, a first cladding disposed about the antiguiding core and a second cladding disposed about the first cladding so as to tend to confine light to said first cladding. The output fiber can comprise a guiding core, a first cladding disposed about the guiding core and a second cladding disposed about the first cladding of the output fiber for tending to confine light to the first cladding of the output fiber. Disclosed is an optical apparatus () for accommodating optical fiber, such as one or more loops of optical fiber. The optical apparatus () can include a body () comprising an inwardly facing surface () adapted for receiving a plurality of loops of a length of optical fiber. The body () can include at least a portion () wherein the inwardly facing surface is continuous between two adjacent loops (). Methods and apparatus are disclosed for disposing the optical fiber with an optical apparatus () for accommodating the optical fiber.

Apparatus and methods for accommodating loops of optical fiber

Disclosed is an optical apparatus including an optical fiber having a wavelength of operation, the optical fiber comprising a first length of the optical fiber joined to a second length of the optical fiber with a splice such that the first and second lengths are in optical communication; a photodetector for sensing light leaking from the splice; and wherein the splice has a splice loss of not greater than 0.5 dB at the wavelength of operation. Methods of sensing light are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for sensing light

An optical fiber can include a glass core that is multimode at a selected wavelength and that comprises an index of refraction and a diameter D, a glass cladding disposed about said glass core, said glass cladding comprising an outer diameter Dand a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction of said core, and a second cladding disposed about said glass cladding, said second cladding comprising an optically cured polymer, said polymer comprising an index of refraction that is less than said first index of refraction. In certain embodiments, the fiber can include various other features. For example, [D/D]can be no greater than 1.5; the polymer can have a modulus of no greater than 100 MPa; the core can include means for affecting the power distribution amongst modes propagated by the core, such as by having a non circular outer perimeter; the core can support at least 100 modes at the selected wavelength; Dcan be at least 250 microns; the fiber can include a region disposed about the second cladding, and the region can comprise a polymer comprising an index of refraction that is greater than the index of refraction of said core. The fiber can be used, for example, for delivering light having the selected wavelength to or from a work object.

Optical fiber for delivering optical energy to or from a work object

An optical assembly for communication of an optical signal between fiber and a receiver or transmitter, including a body including a guideway, a first semiconductor optical element for conversion between electrical and optical signals and for one of receiving or transmitting light, and an optical fiber. The semiconductor optical element is mounted in register with the body. The optical fiber includes a core, a cladding surrounding the core, and a protective coating surrounding the cladding. The guideway receives a selected length of the optical fiber, and the protective coating is present along a majority of the selected length.

Method and apparatus for communicating signals with an optical fiber

A double-clad optical fiber includes a core, a multimode inner cladding layer disposed about the core, and a second cladding layer disposed about the inner cladding layer. The core includes an active material for absorbing pump radiation received by the inner cladding. The multimode inner cladding includes truncated regions including a first material, where the first material has an index of refraction that is different than the material of the inner cladding that surrounds said truncated regions, for promoting the scattering of pump radiation propagating in the multimode inner cladding for increasing the absorption of the pump radiation by the active material of the core. Particles can be distributed in soot deposited via Outside Vapor Deposition for forming the truncated regions in an optical fiber drawn from the preform.
