In a communication system for vehicle-to-environment communication, data to be transmitted is transmitted wirelessly as data packets. The system includes a communication unit and an application unit which are in contact with one another via an internal communication link, the communication unit having a high-frequency antenna and a transceiver for physical data transmission, in addition to a data processor for controlling the physical transmission. The application unit has at least one data processor configured to execute application programs, to control the access of the application programs to the vehicle-to-environment communication and to execute data communication security applications. The data processor of the application unit is configured to forward the data packets including the routing between communication users and to segment the data stream.

A multiband shark fin antenna for a vehicle may include at least one transmitting and one receiving antenna element from the group consisting of AM/FM antennas, telephone and RKE antennas, GPS antenna, SDARS antenna, stacked patch antenna, DAP antenna, WLAN antenna, WIMAX antenna or DRM antenna. The antenna elements are disposed beneath a joint shark fin-shaped outer cover on the exterior of the vehicle. On the inside, the shark fin-shaped outer cover includes an antenna circuit board having the antenna elements disposed thereon. Electronic adjustment or amplifier circuits including a transceiver, tuner or receiver are disposed on both the upper and lower faces of the antenna circuit board. Shielding plates, which shield the adjustment or amplifier circuits with respect to the antenna elements, are disposed on the upper side of the antenna circuit board.

A vehicle antenna unit for participation in vehicle-to-surroundings communication in accordance with the DSRC or ITS-G5 standard having an adhoc network antenna for sending and receiving in the region of 5.9 GHz, having a satellite antenna for receiving satellite locating signals and having driver elements, which are set up to send, bit by bit, and/or to receive data with the adhoc network antenna and the satellite antenna, and having a computation unit for conditioning the data. In order to allow the vehicle to participate in the vehicle-to-surroundings communication, the computation unit is set up to evaluate the satellite locating signals and for the purpose of independent participation by the vehicle antenna unit in the vehicle-to-surroundings communication.
