A method of cleaning up internal diesel injector deposits in a severely fouled engine, the method including combusting in the engine a diesel fuel composition having (a) a quaternary ammonium salt additive; and (b) one or more further nitrogen-containing detergents; in which the quaternary ammonium salt additive includes the quaternised reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid derived acylating agent and a compound able to react with said acylating agent and which includes a tertiary amine group; in which each molecule of the hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid derived acylating agent includes on average at least 1.2 succinic acid moieties.

Fuel compositions, methods and uses relating to quaternary ammonium salt additives for fuel used in spark ignition engines

A quaternary ammonium salt of formula (I): wherein X is a linking group; Y is O, NH or NRwherein Ris H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group; Qis a moiety that includes a quaternary ammonium cation; Ais an anion; Ris an optionally substituted alkylene group; Ris hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group; and n is 0 or a positive integer; provided that n is not 0 when Ris hydrogen. 

The invention provides a fuel additive compound represented by the general formula (I) wherein n is zero or an integer from 1 to 20 and in each succinic acid moiety one of Rand Ris a C-Cinternal olefin moiety, and the other of Rand Ris hydrogen. Additive compositions containing such compounds have low viscosity and are useful in increasing the lubricity of middle distillate fuels.
