A mobile backhaul inter-mesh communication point forms an interface between a wireless mesh network on a first level and a wireless mesh network on a second, higher bandwidth, level. The two wireless networks are differentiated, e.g., by causing the mesh networks to be formed using different spectra, protocols or coding, or antennae. The mobile intra-mesh communication point functions as an access point in the lower level mesh network and as a relay point in the upper level mesh network. Utilizing mobile inter-mesh communication points facilitates deployment of wireless network access points while enabling the location of access points to follow the concentration of network users. Mobile inter-mesh communication points may be deployed in personal vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles, public transportation vehicles such as busses, trains, and aircraft, emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances, and many other types of vehicles.

Method and apparatus for providing mobile inter-mesh communication points in a multi-level wireless mesh network

A method and system for managing handover where a database that receives location information about a moving object includes information regarding which base station is used in a current radio link connection and which base stations were used from historic radio link connections. Using the base station radio link history of the object and an electronic map, a processor selects which physical path the moving object is using. Upon matching the object's path with a history of path routes on the list, the processor will apply an optimized handoff sequence to the moving object. The optimized route can be derived from an algorithm that processes previous historical data from moving objects traveling on the same route.

Method and system for handover in cellular wireless using route programming and training processes

A method and system for managing handover where a database that receives location information about a moving object includes information regarding which base station is used in a current radio link connection and which base stations were used from historic radio link connections. Using the base station radio link history of the object and an electronic map, a processor coupled to the memory of the database selects which physical path the moving object is using. Upon matching the object's path with a history of path routes on the list, the processor will apply an optimized handoff sequence to the moving object. The optimized route can be derived from an algorithm that processes previous historical data from moving objects traveling on the same route. Methods of providing the location of moving objects via location sensors may be used to provide the database with higher resolution information about a moving object's location on an electronic map and allow further enhancement of the handoff optimization. Generally, location data is used to quickly determine which route the moving object is using and more quickly assign an optimized handoff sequence. Historical data along known routes can include time and spatial information to be processed by the routing algorithm. The database may reside in a central location or within each moving object or a combination of both.

A technique for improved mapping of the contacts of a PLD to the contacts of one or more other electronic components are provided. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the technique may be realized as a method for mapping contacts of a programmable logic device (PLD) to an electronic component in a signal routing device having one or more layers. The method comprises assigning a set of one or more contacts of the PLD to one or more respective contacts of the electronic component based at least in part on a pattern of electrically conductive traces routed from respective contacts of the electronic component via one or more channels formed at one or more layers of the signal routing device.

Contact mapping using channel routing

A network element is configured to implement scheduled high-power Point-To-Point (PTP) and low-power Point-To-MultiPoint (TMP) transmissions. The high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions may be scheduled as bursts on an 802.16 network to occur in both the downlink subframe and uplink subframe on a given frequency channel in the wireless network. The use of an air interface for both types of communications allows the PTP and PTMP communications to be scheduled relative to each other in a unified manner to increase quality of service and minimize interference between the backhaul PTP and access PTMP networks, even though the PTP and PTMP communications take place on the same channel using the same underlying wireless technology. Buffers may be used to store data received in a PTP downlink burst prior to transmission in a PTMP downlink burst, and may be used to store data received in an uplink PTMP burst prior to transmission in an uplink PTP burst.

Network element for implementing scheduled high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions

Redundant wireless links in a meshed backhaul network may be used to improve quality of service on the backhaul network by confining knowledge of the duality to the attached network elements. Globally, an aggregate bandwidth of the redundant wireless links may be advertised to allow network level routing to treat the redundant links as a single logical link. At the link level, however, the network elements may differentiate between different types of traffic to provide preferential service to particular types of traffic. By using different physical links within the logical link for particular types of traffic, the quality of service for that type of traffic may be improved by not causing different types of traffic to compete for the same bandwidth. The redundant links may be interfaced using a tower network including a radio accessed router optionally powered using solar power, to isolate the tower network from ground equipment.

Method and apparatus for improving quality of service over meshed bachaul facilities in a wireless network

Inner layer traces on a multilayer printed wiring board are exposed to enable direct interconnection with another device such as a printed wiring board. The traces may be exposed by removing at least some of the dielectric substrate material around the traces, or by extending the traces beyond the other layers of the printed wiring board. Corresponding conductors associated with the other device are placed in direct physical contact with the exposed inner layer traces, and may be aligned and secured with guide plates, alignment pins and spring members. Such direct connection mitigates the need for vias, and has more favorable electrical characteristics for high frequency signal transmission.

Signal layer interconnects

A technique for facilitating signal transmission at high signal frequencies in a multi-layer substrate is disclosed. In one embodiment a multi-layer substrate comprises a conductor or pair of conductors, a first dielectric layer on a first side of the conductor or pair of conductors and a second dielectric layer on a second side of the conductor or pair of conductors. An air channel is provided in the first dielectric layer, the air channel formed to be substantially coextensive with the conductor or pair of conductors. A conductive shield surrounds the conductor or pair of conductors, the first dielectric layer, and the second dielectric layer in order to eliminate crosstalk. The conductor or pair of conductors may have discrete spaced edges and the width of the conductor or pair of conductors may be increased in order to adjust the impedance because of the low dielectric constant of air. Furthermore, additional air channels and a supporting layer may be included in the structure.

Embedded shielded stripline (ESS) structure using air channels within the ESS structure

A connector assembly includes a substrate assembly and a receptacle. The substrate assembly includes a first substrate layer having a conductive trace that is accessible for direct electrical interconnection with a first conductor associated with another device. A second substrate layer on the assembly includes an electrical contact for electrical interconnection with a second conductor associated with the other device. The electrical contact on the second substrate layer is disposed such that when the substrate assembly is inserted into the receptacle, the electrical contact is electrically connected with the second conductor, a direct electrical interconnection between the conductive trace and the first conductor is maintained. The arrangement is advantageous in that the connector assembly is capable of transmitting low frequency signals through electrical connections that also serve to maintain a high frequency direct electrical interconnection.

Integrated high and low frequency connector assembly

A protection arrangement for a telephone subscriber line interface circuit is disclosed. The arrangement is particularly useful for protecting an electronic telephone set from over-voltage and over-current fault conditions. The arrangement provides a FET that operates in saturation mode to connect an office battery to the subscriber line under normal operation. The FET also provides isolation capabilities for protecting the line circuit from an over-current condition on the subscriber line. Over-voltage protection is provided by way of an isolation relay between the line circuit and the subscriber line. Both the FET and isolation relay are operated by a controller that uses timers in the methods of over-voltage and over-current protection that it performs. A further capability of the arrangement is that it resets itself after the fault condition has ended. This feature is particularly useful in the case of fault conditions of short duration.

Voltage and protection arrangement for a telephone subscriber line interface circuit

An interconnection device has a substrate that includes a conductive trace having an exposed portion at an edge of the substrate. The exposed portion is tapered toward the edge of the substrate. The exposed portion is provided for direct physical contact with a second conductive trace exposed at an edge of a second substrate. A high frequency direct electrical interconnection is thereby provided that reduces the disadvantageous effects of lateral, longitudinal, and co-planar misalignment between the conductive traces.

Signal layer interconnect using tapered traces

A technique for electrically interconnecting a signal between a first circuit board and a second circuit board is disclosed. In each board, at least one signal conductor is shielded by an electrically conductive shield. Multiple conductors may be shielded by the same shield. A first opening is formed in the electrically conductive shield of the first circuit board and a second opening is formed in the electrically conductive shield of the second circuit board so as to expose the signal conductor in the each circuit board. An electrically conductive adhesive, reflowed solder paste, or interposer/elastomer device is applied surrounding at least one of the openings and may further be applied within at least one of the openings. The first circuit board and the second circuit board are then positioned such that the first opening and the second opening are aligned and a signal propagating along the first signal conductor is electrically interconnected to the second signal conductor.

Technique for electrically interconnecting signals between circuit boards

A network device includes optical modules with both electrical and optical connections facing an end of the optical module configured to be plugged into the network device. The optical modules may extend through a faceplate of the network device or may be retained behind the faceplate. Utilizing optical modules with both electrical and optical connections facing one end of the optical module enables optical fiber management may take place within the network device and independent of the electrical connections. This facilitates replacement of non-functional or obsolete optical modules. The optical modules may be parallel to or approximately parallel to the connector plane when connected to the connector plane.
