The present invention provides a system, method and apparatus for providing multiple quality of service classes to subscribers in a network by determining a subscriber's quality of service information by using a database containing quality of service information for each subscriber that has subscribed to one of the multiple quality of service classes, and storing the subscriber's quality of service information in a visitor location register where the subscriber is currently registered.

Method, apparatus and system for providing multiple quality of service classes to subscribers in a network

Within a wireless telecommunications network, a method and system of transferring information from a Mobile Station (MS) in the network transparently to a Post Processing Subsystem (PPSS) outside the network . The PPSS requests information about the MS by transmitting a request to the network via an external node coupling the PPSS to the network . An element in the network then receives the request from the PPSS and identifies the type of external node from which the request was received. Information is collected about the MS that is responsive to the request. Finally, the information is transmitted in a network message format to the PPSS through the identified external node from which the request was received.

Method and system for transferring information to a post processing subsystem outside the wireless network

Methods and arrangements are provided for use in a mobile communications network to determine an appropriate tariff for a mobile station accessing the capabilities of a mobile communications network having a coverage area that extends over a plurality of time-zone, borders, and/or other cost/service-sensitive regions. A time stamp is used, which includes an offset value associated with the location of the mobile station accessing the mobile communication services, to more precisely and efficiently determine an appropriate tariff to be charged, and/or service to be rendered to the subscriber associated with the mobile station. The methods and arrangements are particularly useful in mobile communication networks having satellite nodes.

Methods and arrangements for use in mobile communication networks spanning multiple time-zones

A method and system enables optimal call routing in a satellite communications network when a satellite subscriber has, for example, call forwarding active. Many satellite networks re-register a satellite subscriber's (e.g., the A-subscriber's) subscription information to a satellite gateway that is most cost efficient when the satellite subscriber initiates an outgoing call. If the called party (e.g. the B-subscriber) is distant from the satellite subscriber's home country, the distant gateway to which the re-registration occurs is likely to be far from the gateway of his or her native country, which is often to where call forwarding is directed. When an incoming call from a C-subscriber is detected for the A-subscriber, the call is handled normally until call forwarding is detected in the distant gateway. Once call forwarding is detected, a satellite gateway through which the call will be completed (e.g., routed or re-registered) is determined such that, for example, the resulting call charges will be deterministic and/or equal to a normal expected value.

Method and system for deterministic charging in a satellite communications system

A mobile telephone with an emergency call capability protector monitors a battery power supply circuit with an emergency call reserve power detector to determine when the power remaining in the battery power supply circuit has decreased beneath a pre-selected minimum emergency call reserve power level that is greater than the absolute minimum level detected by a monitor and battery depletion detector. A microprocessor operating in accordance with a program stored in an emergency call capability program memory selectively inhibits, subject to override, the making of non-emergency calls and terminates ongoing non-emergency calls when said power detector determines that the power supply circuit has gone beneath said pre-selected minimum emergency call reserve power level.

Reserve power system for any battery operated device

A system and method in a communications network for minimizing the number of attempts required to establish a communication between two nodes is disclosed. Each node maintains a database table composed of addresses of other nodes within the communications system. Associated with each nodal entry is a list of dialogue types that have been initiated with or terminated from the relevant node. Associated with each dialogue type entry is the most-advanced protocol version, such as the Mobile Application Part (MAP), that has been negotiated with the affiliated node for that dialogue type. When a first node wishes to initiate a dialogue with a second node, the first node checks the database table. The first node locates the second node in the table by address, locates the appropriate dialogue by type, and then determines the appropriate MAP version. If either the node or the specifically desired dialogue type is not within the database table, the first node attempts to establish the dialogue with the highest MAP version that the first node supports. After any resulting fall-back procedure has occurred, the first node stores in the database table the highest MAP version that was negotiated. The database table is periodically refreshed by clearing one or more entries.

System and method for facilitating inter-nodal protocol agreement in a telecommunications

A method, system, and apparatus enables a subscriber to be warned via the mobile terminal (MT) when the MT has moved into an invalid area during a call. The network monitors the location/position of the MT during a call. When the MT enters a region (e.g., a cell) that is invalid because it is located within an invalid area, the network sends a message to the MT. The message may be, for example, a novel cause code in a Direct Transfer Application Part (DTAP) message that triggers a warning action by the MT when the network does not have access to the transmission reaching the MT. The message may alternatively be an announcement or tone sent directly to the MT when the network does have direct access to the transmission reaching the MT. The network also begins a timer. If the MT is returned to a valid area before the is timer expires, the call may be continued (and a message so indicating may optionally be sent to the MT from the network). Otherwise, the network disconnects the call at the expiration of the timer.

Method, system and apparatus for providing a warning when a mobile terminal may lose service

A mobile terminal with a reserve power system is provided herein, wherein if the mobile terminal has detected that the power level of the power supply connected to it has fallen below a predetermined emergency power reserve level it will restrict its activities related to the reception of transmissions, such as voice calls, and activities related to contacting the network during stand-by, in order to protect the capability to place and receive calls to/from a default or user-specified set of numbers (e.g., emergency numbers, number of spouse, number of parents etc.). The restriction on the reception of transmissions can be handled by the network, by the mobile terminal or both.

Mobile terminal reserve power system

A method and system that enables a subscriber and/or operator to specify one or more conditions under which a given feature such as a supplementary service (SS) is to be executed. When a call event occurs, the relevant telecommunications network evaluates a logical expression that includes variables corresponding to the specified conditions. If (i) the specified conditions are such that the logical expression for the given feature is &ldquo;TRUE&rdquo; and (ii) the feature is &ldquo;ON&rdquo;, then the network executes the given feature and may further perform a specified task related to the executed feature. If (i) the logical expression is not evaluated to &ldquo;TRUE&rdquo; or (ii) the feature is not &ldquo;ON&rdquo;, then the network does not execute the given feature. The network preferably evaluates a logical expression at least for each feature that the subscriber has turned &ldquo;ON&rdquo;. The method and system is applicable to, for example, the call forwarding, call waiting, multi-party calling, and call barring features. The conditions may include, for example, time, usage, password, and calling party number.

Method and system for enabling the control of execution of features in a telecommunications network

A first subscriber activates a hold call back subscriber feature in response to a second subscriber placing the first subscriber on call hold. After the activation, the first subscriber goes onhook. When the second subscriber later wishes to take the first subscriber off of call hold, a first end office serving the first subscriber recognizes the second subscriber's action and accordingly alerts the first subscriber back. Upon answering the ring back, a call connection is re-established between the first subscriber and the second subscriber. A connection-less signal is communicated between the first end office and a second end office serving the second subscriber to queue, monitor, and inform the second subscriber's action. Upon receiving a connection-less signal from the second office indicating that the second subscriber wishes to take the first subscriber off of call hold, the first end office originates another call setup request towards the second subscriber.
