A communication device, computer program product, and method provide a heat sink antenna that performs dual functions of thermal energy transferring and radio frequency (RF) communication. The communication device includes a millimeter wave (mmWave) antenna module. The communication device includes a heat sink antenna having a first portion in thermal conductive contact with at least a portion of a surface of the mmWave antenna module. The heat sink antenna has a second portion extending away from the first mmWave antenna module to transfer thermal energy away from the first mmWave antenna module. An RF front end of the communication device includes mmWave transmitter that radiates a mmWave signal via the mmWave antenna module, resulting in generation of the thermal energy.

An alert peripheral device that provides sensory notification to a user of the device includes: a power subsystem; a communication mechanism by which notification signals is received from a first user equipment (UE) that generates and transmits the notification signals in response to detection of specific events at the first UE; and a response notification mechanism that provides a sensory response of the peripheral device following receipt of a notification of a detected event (NDE) signal. The device further includes an embedded controller coupled to each of the other components and which includes firmware that when executed on the embedded controller configures the embedded controller to: establish a communication link between the communication mechanism and the first UE; and in response to detecting a receipt of the NDE signal from the first UE, trigger the response notification mechanism to exhibit the sensory response.

A method in an electronic device includes determining, with one or more processors, an operating condition of the electronic device influencing one or more magnetic fields measured by a voice coil motor sensor of the electronic device. The method includes obtaining, by the one or more processors from a memory of the electronic device, an expected voice coil motor sensor measurement that is a function of the operating condition. Thereafter, the method includes causing, by the one or more processors, a voice coil motor driver to modify a voice coil motor drive signal until the voice coil motor sensor detects the expected voice coil motor sensor measurement, thereby compensating for effects of the operating condition affecting the voice coil motor.

In aspects of managing antenna module heat and RF emissions, an antenna module includes antenna elements that emit radio frequency (RF) signals for wireless data communication. The antenna module also includes an integrated heat sink to dissipate heat generated by an amplifier on the antenna module, where the heat sink is formed as a metallic component having a surface approximately coplanar with the antenna elements. The antenna module also includes one or more grooves that are formed into the surface of the heat sink, where the one or more grooves are effective to allow the RF signals being emitted from the antenna elements without deformation of a radiation pattern of the RF signals.

Implementations for heat structure for thermal mitigation are described. The described heat structures, for instance, provide a multi-layered structure that optimizes heat spreading and dissipation, as well as wireless performance of wireless devices. A heat structure, for instance, is installed internally in a wireless device adjacent various internal components to absorb heat generated by the components, and to dissipate the heat. According to various implementations, a heat structure is implemented as a thermally conductive layer surrounded by layers of electrically conductive material. Electrically conductive vias can be formed that traverse the thermally conductive layer and form an electrical connection between different electrically conductive layers to mitigate current flow in the thermally conductive layer.

The method includes determining a current noise level of at least one active cooling device of an electronic device. The method further includes measuring, by at least one microphone of the electronic device, a level of ambient noise within a surrounding environment. The method further includes measuring, via at least one thermal sensor, a heat load generated by at least one heat generating device of the electronic device. The method further includes applying, to the at least one active cooling device, at least one adjustment that mitigates the heat load and minimizes noise generated by the at least one active cooling device relative to the level of ambient noise.

A method, system, and computer program product to correct for optical distortion in media captured by a camera in a liquid environment. The method includes detecting immersion of an image capturing device in a liquid environment. The method further includes determining a most recent location of the image capturing device and accessing a geographical database to determine a specific liquid environment that is associated with the most recent location. The method further includes automatically retrieving a corrected camera refractive index corresponding to the specific liquid environment. The method further includes intercepting live image data of a current scene that is captured by at least one camera sensor of the image capturing device and applying the corrected camera refractive index to the live image data to correct for an optical distortion in the live image data. The method further includes providing the corrected live image data to an output device.

A method, a system, and a computer program product for managing image quality of an electronic display. The method includes identifying a visual content encoded in a first color space that is to be presented on an electronic display. The method further includes identifying, for the electronic display, a color profile that specifies color tristimulus values for the electronic display that are expressed as a function of temperature. The method further includes determining a current temperature of the electronic display and applying the color profile to the visual content to create a modified visual content for presentation on the electronic display. The method further includes rendering the modified visual content by the electronic display and adjusting, during rendering of the modified visual content, the color tristimulus values of the modified visual content in real-time based on the current temperature.

A method, a mobile device, and a computer program product for managing display brightness of a mobile device. The method includes detecting a first temperature value of a mobile device and determining, by a processor, if the first temperature value is greater than a threshold temperature value. In response to determining that the first temperature value is greater than the threshold temperature value, video data is retrieved for several video frames. The method further includes determining if the video data contains a transition from a first video frame to a second video frame that includes a change in light level that is greater than a light level threshold. In response to determining that the video data contains the change in light level, the display is triggered to reduce a first light level associated with the second video frame to a second light level when the second video frame is displayed.

Managing display brightness of a mobile device

A method and apparatus are for providing information to at least one other wireless communication device (WCD of a group of WCDs of which the WCD is a member, wherein the WCDs in the group have agreed to share computing resources. An assignment as one of a provider WCD and a recipient WCD is received in response to the information. At least one of two actions is taken. The first action is to operate, as a provider WCD, a power intensive portion of an application and providing the results to at least one recipient WCD of the group of WCDs. The second action is to operate, as a recipient WCD, to receive the results. Another method provides for a WCD to make a selection of the provider and recipient WCDs.

Apparatus and method for improving application performance within a group of communication devices

Various embodiments transmit a radio-frequency ('RF') beam using two or more RF antennas of a mobile device, e.g. a mobile phone. The RF signals that make up the RF beam are selected to create an emission pattern associated with object detection. Some of the RF antennas can be multi-purpose, where in addition to transmitting the RF beam, the antennas are used for RF communications. Upon receiving a reflected radiation pattern of the RF beam from an object, the reflected radiation pattern is analyzed to identify characteristics of the object. Depending upon what characteristics have been identified, one or more actions can be automatically performed.
