A microfluidic device for increasing convective clearance of particles from a fluid is provided. In some implementations, described herein the microfluidic device includes multiple layers that each define infusate, blood, and filtrate channels. Each of the channels have a pressure profile. The device can also include one or more pressure control features. The pressure control feature controls a difference between the pressure profiles along a length of the device. For example, the pressure control feature can control the difference between the pressure profile of the filtrate channel and the pressure profile of the blood channel. In some implementations, the pressure control feature controls the pressure difference between two channels such that the difference varies along the length of the channels by less than 50% of the pressure difference between the channels at the channels' inlets.

Systems and methods for increasing convective clearance of undesired particles in a microfluidic device

A medical patch having a multi-piece bottom liner including a central liner sequentially removable independently of two outer perimeter liners. The multi-piece liner covering two adhesives of different peel force. Removal of the central liner exposes a first temporary/repositionable adhesive. Once properly positioned, the outer perimeter liners are removed to expose a second stronger adhesive. A foam cushioning layer is disposed beneath and extends beyond a footprint of every printed circuit board to prevent skin irritation. The medical patch may be designed specifically for stimulation of the sacral (S3 foramen) spinal nerve without the use of a separate mechanical placement tool or assistance by another.

Transdermal medical patch

A placement device for a medical patch includes an alignment guide having a shaft with a first end having a first anatomical alignment marker and a second end having a second anatomical alignment marker, a swinging gate both pivotally and rotationally coupled with the first end of the shaft for selectively pivoting the gate toward and away from the shaft and rotating the gate between opposite sides of the shaft, whereby the gate has first and second major faces and a first opening extending through the gate between the first and second major faces. The placement device includes a spacer for selectively adjusting spacing between the gate and the first end of the shaft, and a flexible diaphragm having a flexible dome disposed within the first gate opening. At least one magnet is located in the center of the flexible dome for holding the medical patch within the flexible dome.

A surgical morcellator includes a trocar body portion and a handle portion detachably mounted to the trocar body portion. The trocar body portion is relatively lightweight and may be used separately from the handle portion with other laparoscopic instruments while morcellation is not required during the surgical procedure.

A method is provided for assessing urinary function including removably coupling a first test module to a portable control device, selecting from a plurality of different tests a first test to assess urinary function, the selection being made based on first module identification information obtained by the control device from the test module, and performing the first test. The method may also include one or more of the steps of inserting an insert member coupled to the first test module at least partially into a patient's urinary tract, infusing fluid through the insert member into the urinary tract, and measuring pressure within the urinary tract as fluid is infused therein. The method may further include uncoupling the first test module from the portable control device, coupling a second test module to the portable control device, selecting a second test to assess urinary function based on second module identification information obtained by the control device from the second test module, and performing the second test.

An arthroscopic bone burr having an articulated sheath tube. The sheath tube may be articulated angularly and transversely relative to the housing by a ball-type joint, a flange-in-socket joint with sufficient play to permit displacement of the sheath tube, or by use of an elastomer. Anti-rotation means are provided to prevent the sheath tube from rotating relative to the housing.

A medical system is provided for assessing urinary function. The system includes a control device and at least one test module capable of being removably coupled to the control device such that, when coupled, the system is capable of performing a test to assess urinary function. The control device may include a processor and memory having stored therein a plurality of software subroutine, at least one of which directs a test to assess urinary function. The test module may include a module identification device, and the control device selects the software subroutine based upon information obtained from the module identification device. The test module may further include a tubing assembly forming a first fluid conduit between a first fluid inlet and a first fluid outlet and an insert member dimensioned for at least partial insertion into a patient's urinary tract and coupled to the first fluid outlet so that fluid infused through the first fluid conduit flows through the insert member.

A test module is provided for coupling with a control device to form a portable system for assessing urinary function. The test module includes a test module housing, at least one coupling element for removably coupling the test module to the control device, a tubing assembly located at least partially within the test module housing, and a pressure interface in fluid communication with at least a portion of the tubing assembly. When the test module is coupled to the control device, the pressure interface is positioned relative to a pressure sensor in the control device so as to transmit pressure data thereto. The tubing assembly may also couple with a pump device in the control device so as to enable the pump device to pump fluid through the tubing assembly.

A surgical balloon is provided for insertion into a uterus that includes a substantially continuous outer wall defining an exterior surface of the balloon on a first side and an interior hollow of the balloon on a second side, with the outer wall being formed from a stretchable elastic material and being stretchable by pressure within the inner hollow between a collapsed state and an expanded state. The substantially continuous outer wall has a base portion for coupling with shaft, an intermediate portion adjacent the base portion and an end portion at a distal end of the balloon and adjacent the intermediate portion. The base portion has a first primary wall thickness, the intermediate portion has a second primary wall thickness, and the end portion has a third primary wall thickness.

An excision and aspiration apparatus adapted to sample a tissue mass includes a receptacle, such as a suction cup, which is adapted to receive a superficial portion only of the total tissue mass. An excision mechanism, such as a cutting wire, excises the superficial portion from the rest of the tissue mass. The excision and aspiration apparatus further includes a suction tube having a receiving channel for collecting the excised superficial portion of the tissue mass, as well as a vacuum source for creating suction within the suction tube that is sufficient to draw the excised superficial portion of the tissue mass into the receiving channel of the suction tube.

A system and method for assessing urinary function is provided. The system includes a processor, a tubing assembly forming a first fluid conduit between a first fluid inlet and a first fluid outlet, and an insert member having a channel therethrough and coupled to the first fluid outlet so that fluid flowing through the first fluid conduit may flow through the insert member. The insert member is dimensioned for at least partial insertion into a patient's urethral canal distal of the patient's urethral sphincter, and dimensioned so that, when inserted, it substantially blocks fluid flow into or out of the urethral canal other than through the insert member channel. The system further includes a fluid delivery device electrically coupled to and controlled by the processor, and coupled to the first fluid conduit for pumping fluid therethrough, and a pressure detection system for detecting pressure within the urethral canal distal of the urethral sphincter and providing information correlating to the detected pressure to the processor. The method includes coupling the test module to the control device, inserting the insert member into a patient, infusing fluid through the insert member until the urethral sphincter opens, and measuring pressure within the urethral canal as fluid is infused therein. Also provided is a test module for coupling to a control device to form a system for assessing urinary function.

An insertion device is provided for use in assessing urinary function. The insert device includes an insert member for at least partial insertion into a patient's urethral canal having a length such that it is positioned distal of the urethral sphincter, and having an outer surface at least a portion of which is configured to engage the inner wall of the urethra to substantially prevent fluid flow therebetween. The insert member has a channel therethrough through which fluid from a fluid source can be introduced into the urethral canal. Also provided is a device for introducing fluid into a patient's urethral canal including a hand-sized casing having a fluid conduit therein between a fluid inlet and a fluid source assembly. The device further includes an activation device movable between a first position wherein it does not obstruct the fluid conduit and a second position wherein it does obstruct the fluid conduit. An insert member is coupled to a distal end of the hand-sized casing and has a channel therethrough between a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and is dimensioned for at least partial insertion into the patient's urethral canal distal of the urethral sphincter. The insert member channel is in fluid communication with the fluid conduit.

A surgical balloon for insertion into a body cavity with a major chamber having a first volume and an annexed minor chamber communicating therewith and having a second volume less than the first volume has a continuous outer wall which defines the exterior surface of the balloon on a first side and the interior hollow of the balloon on a second side. The wall is formed from a stretchable elastic material permitting the interior hollow of the balloon to accommodate a variable volume of fluid ranging from a minimum deflated volume associated with a relaxed state of the wall to a maximum inflated volume associated with a stretched state of the wall. The wall has selected areas of varying expansibility attributable to varying wall thickness, heat or chemical treatment. The wall provides the balloon with an inflated shape within the cavity approximating the interior shape of the body cavity, including a first portion approximating the major chamber and a second portion approximating the minor chamber. As applied to balloons for insertion into the uterus for endometrial ablation therapy, the balloon has a pair of projections for inserting into the uterine cornua. The balloon may be preformed to mimic the uterine shape in the deflated state, and may be formed from polyurethane promoting conformance of the inflated balloon to the uterine cavity.
