This disclosure relates to a lubricating oil (e.g., gear oil) for use in an electric or hybrid vehicle. The lubricating oil has a composition including one or more lubricating oil base stocks as a major component, and one or more lubricating oil additives, as a minor component. The one or more lubricating oil base stocks include at least one Group IV base oil, or at least one Group V base oil. The lubricating oil has a kinematic viscosity (KV) from 1 cSt to 7 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. as determined by ASTM D-445, and an electrical conductivity at room temperature of less than 15,000 pS/m as determined by ASTM D-2624. This disclosure also relates to methods for producing a lubricating oil for a transmission, gear train, gear set, gear box, or gears of an electric vehicle powertrain and methods for improving energy efficiency, while maintaining or improving wear control.

Low viscosity gear oil compositions for electric and hybrid vehicles

The present application is directed to a method and system for preparing gaseous utility streams from gaseous process streams, particularly, removing oil contamination from such streams prior to use in a dry gas seal. The methods and systems may include at least one kinetic swing adsorption process including pressure swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption, calcination, and inert purge processes to treat gaseous streams for use in dry gas seals of rotating equipment such as compressors, turbines and pumps and other utilities. The adsorbent materials used include a high surface area solid structured microporous and mesoporous materials.

Method and apparatus for removal of oil from utility gas stream

A method for improving wear protection in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil having a HTHS viscosity of less than 2.6 cP at 150&#xb0; C. The formulated oil has a composition including a major amount of a lubricating oil base stock and a minor amount of metal phosphate nanoplatelets. The metal phosphate nanoplatelets are dispersed in the lubricating oil base stock sufficient for the formulated oil to pass wear protection requirements of one or more engine tests selected from TU3M, Sequence IIIG, Sequence IVA and OM646LA. Also provided are lubricating engine oil composition having improved wear protection.

Enhanced durability performance of lubricants using functionalized metal phosphate nanoplatelets

Provided is a method for stabilizing a dispersion of a carbon nanomaterial in a lubricating oil basestock. The method includes providing a lubricating oil basestock; dispersing a carbon nanomaterial in the lubricating oil basestock; and adding at least one block copolymer thereto. The at least one block copolymer has two or more blocks includes at least one alkenylbenzene block and at least one linear alpha olefin block. The at least one block copolymer is present in an amount sufficient to stabilize the dispersion of the carbon nanomaterial in the lubricating oil basestock. Also provided is a lubricating engine oil having a composition including: a lubricating oil base stock; a carbon nanomaterial dispersed in the lubricating oil basestock; and at least one block copolymer.

Lubricant compositions and processes for preparing same

This invention is directed to a lubricant composition that is comprised of a continuous phase and a discontinuous phase, i.e., a two phase lubricant composition. The continuous phase and the discontinuous phase of the lubricant of this invention are oil or oil type compositions that are essentially insoluble in one another. The lubricant composition is comprised of a continuous phase base oil that is comprised of a low viscosity Group II, III, IV or GTL base stock or a blend of at least two of the Group II, III, IV and GTL base stocks, optionally including a low viscosity Group V base stock, with the continuous phase base oil having, independently, a viscosity of from 1 to 100 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. A method and apparatus for measuring thickness and traction properties of elastohydrodynamic lubricant (EHL) films is described. The apparatus utilizes at least one ball or roller loaded against the internal diameter of a transparent ring having a larger radius than said ball or roller. A lubricant is placed between the rotating roller and ring thereby forming an EHL film where the ball and ring contact. Roller and ring rotating speeds are controlled to obtain different amounts of relative sliding motion between their surfaces. Contact between the surfaces and the resultant film are observed via the transparent ring which allows optical measurements of lubricating film thickness. Traction forces generated during contact are measured by any suitable force measuring device.
