A character recognition system is disclosed utilizing a dead-band correlator for providing recognition of printed typestyles having horizontal and vertical stroke width variations without impairing the resolution required for character feature analysis. The system provides fewer character-to-mask registration errors, simultaneous computation of correlation scores of registration positions of masks with respect to the unknown character to compensate for additional registration errors, improved reject and substitution rates by utilizing unique threshold and separation requirements for masks, lower error rates by using small and large noise filtering and combining dual level acceptance criteria used in conjunction with re-try methods, stroke width normalization to aid in recognition of characters with badly degraded stroke widths, and selection of specific mask sets during multiple typestyle recognition processing than has previously been possible.

Method and apparatus for character recognition employing a dead-band

The processing of video signal information derived from scanning the characters or marks on a background sheet includes normalizing the signal levels against changes in operating conditions and dynamically altering the threshold level of the video signal in response to the changes in levels of video signal.

Dynamic video system and method

A selecting machine of the type commonly used for addressing mailed material from individual data-bearing cards, using tri-level logical comparator circuitry to compare the individual cards against an interchangeable master card. Both the individual and the master cards are perforated in files of holes longitudinal to the direction in which they are synchronously moved by the machine, the files of perforations being sensed by phototransistors connected in turn to the logic circuitry. For each potentially perforable site on the individual card, there are two corresponding locations on the master card, one of which when matched by a perforation on the individual card indicates nominal selection of the individual card, the other of which indicates positive rejection of the individual card, overriding any nominal selection, with rejection by default occurring if neither location on the master is perforated to correspond with a perforation at the equivalent site on the individual card. Synchronization pulses for gating the logic circuitry in the examination process are derived from a completely perforate file on the master card.
