A method and apparatus for singulating and delivering wire leads as part of an electrode welding process in lamp production. Leads in bulk form are transported by a feeder. The leads are dropped from the feeder and passively caught in a desired orientation within a rotational turret. The turret delivers the leads to an exit point. The leads are processed at the exit point by pick-and-place equipment.

Electrode tip loading method and apparatus

Two parts are coaxially aligned at opposing face ends. The parts are temporarily compressed together at the face ends during welding thereof to control size of the resulting weld joint. Temporary compression may be effected by applying a compression force through the parts to abut together the face ends, and then limiting plastic displacement of the parts at the weld joint during welding. The displacement control limits radial expansion at the weld joint in a preferred embodiment.

Displacement controlled butt welding

A linear double ended lamp can be modified into a number of non-linear arrangements by heating selected regions of the lamp ends to the softening temperature and bending the lamp ends to a desired angular configuration. Preferably, the lamp ends are bent across the sealing foil that is hermetically sealed to the lamp envelope. One or both ends of the lamp can be bent as desired to define a variety of configurations. According to the method of forming the bent double ended lamp, selected regions of the lamp are raised above the softening temperature while the remainder of the lamp is maintained at a lower temperature. Preferably, the lamp ends are bent along an axis offset and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the lamp to prevent accumulation of material.

A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes a sealed outer envelope, an arc tube located within the envelope, a cylindrical shroud positioned around the arc tube, stops positioned at ends of the shroud to capture the shroud therebetween, conduction wires which both provide electrical energy to the arc tube and mechanically support the arc tube and the shroud, and a compression spring secured by an eyelet for removing tension loading from the arc tube.

Retaining spring and stop means for lamp mount

A metal halide arc discharge lamp rated for not more than 150 watts and 100 volts and which can be operated in either a horizontal or vertical position without a significant change in color temperature or lumen output has an ellipsoidal arc chamber mounted within a nitrogen-containing outer envelope. The arc chamber contains a pair of electrodes, mercury and sodium and scandium iodides and is coated at each end with a heat reflective coating. The chamber aspect ratio, electrode insertion length, metal halide density, coating length and wall loading are defined within narrow ranges.

Universal burn metal halide lamp

This lamp comprises an envelope of vitreous light-transmitting material enclosing an internal space, light-generating means within said space, and conductive lead structure projecting into said space and comprising inner and outer lead members and a foil member connected between said lead members. A first portion of the envelope surrounds the foil member and is sealed thereto, and a second portion of the envelope is located inwardly of the first portion. A tubular bead of vitreous material is provided about the inner lead member. This bead fits within the second envelope portion, is joined thereto, and supports the inner lead member in a precise predetermined portion within the envelope. The inner lead member projects inwardly beyond the bead and provides support for the light-generating means.

Means for supporting and sealing the lead structure of a lamp

A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes a sealed outer envelope, an arc tube located within the envelope, a cylindrical shroud positioned around the arc tube, stops positioned at ends of the shroud to capture the shroud therebetween, and conduction wires which both provide electrical energy to the arc tube and mechanically support the arc tube and the shroud. The outside diameter of the shroud is maximized in relation to the inside diameter of the neck of the outer envelope such that the shroud can be inserted through the neck during manufacture of said lamp. In order to reduce electrolytic sodium loss, a conductor wire passing through the shroud in close proximity to the arc tube is surrounded by a ceramic sleeve to electrically insulate the conductor wire from the arc tube, and the stops are ceramic to electrically insulate the shroud from the conductor wires.
