A method for determining an estimate of a response characteristic that depends on a number of input factors includes developing a mathematical model of the response as a function of the input factors based on a statistical fit of a plurality of measured data points. The method also includes mapping the value of the response characteristic and the input factors at a plurality of conditions. The method combines the mapped data with the mathematical model to produce an estimate of the response characteristic that is more accurate over a range of conditions than either the mapped data or the model taken individually.

Method for determining an engine response characteristic

An engine control system, controller, and method for estimating a stopped engine crank angle of an internal combustion engine. Typical crank sensors do not output a reliable crank signal when the engine is about to stop, and do not indicate crank direction which is necessary to determine if engine bounce-back occurs. A crank sensor signal is analyzed as the engine coasts to a stop so that a coast-down model can be adjusted to accurately estimate the stopped engine crank angle. A bounce-back model is also used to estimate an engine bounce-back angle and to make further corrections to the estimated stopped engine crank angle.

A system and method for controlling an engine involves providing a model for volumetric efficiency. The model recognizes that volumetric efficiency (VE) has stronger dependency on intake pressure than on exhaust pressure. The model allows tuning of the relative importance of intake pressure to exhaust pressure, specifically, by reducing the relative importance of the exhaust pressure to intake pressure in the composite volumetric efficiency load variable. The model provides for a calculation where the exhaust pressure term of the engine pressure ratio is de-rated through the use of an exponent less than one.

A system and method for controlling boost pressure in various turbo-charged engine configurations as well as variable geometry turbine (VGT) arrangements includes an electronic controller programmed to receive a predetermined desired boost pressure P. A desired pressure delta &#x394;Pacross a waste-gate valve is determined using the desired boost pressure P. A control signal is generated for controlling the waste-gate valve so as to achieve the desired pressure delta &#x394;P. In boost pressure and vacuum pneumatically-actuated waste-gate valve arrangements, the respective solenoid duty cycles are obtained through use of various data structures. Where a waste-gate valve position is controlled by an electrical motor, the valve position is determined using a data structure as a function of desired waste-gate valve flow at sonic standard conditions.

System and method for model based boost control of turbo-charged engines

A real-time system for modeling a turbo-charged engine includes a model configured to estimate various exhaust states such as turbine inlet pressure, turbine outlet pressure, turbine outlet temperature, turbine mass flow rate and waste-gate valve mass flow rate. The model is dependent only on the availability of normal operating values available in a conventionally-configured automotive controller and one or more measured intake side parameters such as ambient pressure, boost pressure, ambient temperature and compressor mass flow rate. The model is constructed to reflect a high-level application of energy conservation between the turbine (generated power) and compressor (absorbed power). A method for the indirect measurement of turbine and waste-gate flow uses turbine inlet and outlet pressure, inlet temperature and engine mass air flow rate measurements. A method for the indirect measurement of turbine efficiency avoids the need for manufacturer's turbine data.

System and method for modeling of turbo-charged engines and indirect measurement of turbine and waste-gate flow and turbine efficiency

A system and method for controlling an engine involves providing a pumping torque estimation model. The model distinguishes between pumping losses due to throttling and pumping losses due to valve flow losses. The model is implemented by a pair of look-up tables. The data in each look-up table reflect Pumping Mean Effective Pressure (PMEP), which is indicative of the pumping work. The throttling loss table provides a first contribution based on an engine delta pressure. The valve flow loss table provides a second contribution based on an engine speed and a relative airload. The first and second contributions are summed and then multiplied by a predetermined factor to convert the pumping work (PMEP) into pumping torque. The model will work with naturally-aspirated, turbo-charged and super-charged air induction configurations and provides improved altitude compensation. The model will also work with both spark-ignition and compression-ignition configurations.

System and method for a pumping torque estimation model for all air induction configurations

A system and method for controlling a compressor recirculation valve involves establishing a compressor surge flow threshold expressed in terms of a compressor corrected volume air flow rate. A torque-based engine management system computes a desired mass air flow rate in accordance with a torque request and other operating/predetermined data. The desired mass air flow rate is converted into a desired, corrected volume air flow rate, which is then compared to the compressor surge flow threshold. The controller is configured to open the valve when the desired corrected volume air flow rate is less than the compressor surge flow threshold. A hysteresis function is implemented by providing a surge flow hysteresis threshold that is offset from and greater than the initial compressor surge flow threshold. The controller is configured to close the recirculation valve when the desired corrected volume air flow rate becomes greater than the surge flow hysteresis threshold.

System and method for turbo compressor recirculation valve control

An improved method of dynamically estimating the concentration of recirculated exhaust gases in air/fuel mixture of an internal combustion engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The EGR concentration at engine intake ports is separately estimated with static and dynamic models, and the EGR concentration for control purposes is determined by adjusting the result of the dynamic model based on a deviation of the dynamic model from the static model. This method provides the total EGR concentration, but can alternatively provide the inert EGR concentration through the inclusion of an exhaust inert ratio model.

Dynamic EGR concentration estimation method for a motor vehicle engine

A method of improving the operating characteristics of an internal combustion engine equipped with electronic throttle control employs variable cam timing to vary the phasing of the intake valves and/or exhaust valves so as to achieve lower feed gas emissions and improved fuel economy while delivering as closely as possible the desired torque. The method can be implemented using a fuel-lead strategy or an air-lead strategy. Whenever a change is requested in the amount of torque, the method responds by adjusting the amount of fuel flow, the spark timing, the position of the throttle and/or the positions of the intake valves and/or the exhaust valves so as to deliver the desired torque. The method adjusts those operating parameters in a way that improves the ability of the engine to deliver the desired torque, produce less feed gas emissions, idle more stably, and consume less fuel.
