System for starting a power plant

A method and a device for controlling the blade tip clearance in a rotating machine where the machine comprises a turbine part and a compressor part separate from the turbine part and the stator housing of the turbine part is formed with a stator cone. The invention is characterized in that one or more bladed turbine discs during a non-steady operation, such as start-up, stop and load changes, are moved out of the stator cone whereby the blade tip clearance is increased and that the turbine discs during continuous operation are moved into the stator cone such that the blade top clearance is reduced.

Method and a device in a rotating machine

A power plant utilizing combustion of fuel in a fluidized bed contains a particulate sulfur-absorbing material. A discharge device for bed material and ashes includes a crusher which breaks down the material so that it can be transported away or so that unconsumed absorbent in the bed material is exposed for reuse in the bed. The crusher has a stationary grinding portion and a rotating grinding portion receiving bed material. Scrapers selectively scrape off layers of material during rotation of the rotating grinding portion thus distributing the material around the periphery of the grinding portions.

The bed depth in a power plant burning sulfur-containing fuel in a fluidized bed of material which constitutes a sulfur absorbent in a combustion chamber is controlled on the basis of plant power output. A plurality of sensors connected to the combustion chamber determine the existing bed depth. A bed material mill grinds material removed from the bed prior to returning it to the bed, the rate at which the mill operates being controlled by the extent to which the actual bed depth differs from the desired bed depth. The mill grinds some bed material to small enough size for it to be carried from the combustion chamber with the combustion gases.

A plant for combustion of a particulate fuel in a fluidized bed in a combustion chamber has the fuel supplied into the bottom of the combustion chamber by means of a pneumatic transportation system via nozzles. Fuel for the plurality of nozzles is transported through a duct to a distributor and from there via individual conduits to the nozzles of the combustion chamber. These conduits include flow-inhibiting, pressure-drop generating means, by means of which a pressure drop is generated between the distributor and the combustion chamber. These pressure-drop inducing means influence the velocity of flow and hence the transport capacity of the transport gas so that a desired, normally uniform, distribution of fuel to the bed is secured.

Plant for the combustion of particulate fuel in a fluidized bed

A gas turbine plant having an ignition combustion chamber for applying heated gas to heat the fluidized bed material to ignition temperature. In starting up the plant, a starter motor is employed to rotate a turbine and thereby to cause a compressor to produce compressed air. Liquid or gaseous fuel is applied to the ignition combustion chamber and is ignited within the chamber to heat compressed air from the compressor. The compressed air is passed through the fluidized bed combustor to heat the bed material up to ignition temperature. During the start-up operation, bed material in the fluidized bed combustor is reduced to reduce the pressure requirements for the heated compressed air.

Combustion system for gas turbines and the like, comprising an outer shell connected to a source of pressurized air and surrounding a flame tube which comprises a combustion chamber and a mixing chamber defined within a double wall construction comprising an outer wall and an inner wall forming an annular cooling jacket axially surrounding the mixing chamber. A portion of the pressurized air is directed radially into the mixing chamber through a plurality of nozzles which are spaced about the cooling jacket, while another portion of the air is passed into said annular jacket through apertures in the outer wall alternating with and spaced a distance from said nozzles to produce a plurality of diverging high velocity peripheral streams which sweep and cool the walls of the jacket preliminary to being passed into the mixing chamber through apertures in the inner wall which are aligned with said nozzles.

Combustion chamber for a gas turbine

A method for assembling a turbo-machine of the type comprising a stator housing supporting guide vanes and a rotor having blade discs. According to the method, the stator housing is placed with its axis vertically oriented on a base member which supports the housing both in the vertical and in the horizontal direction. Guide vanes and blade discs are alternately placed in the housing with the guide vanes being secured to the interior of the housing and the blade discs being supported in stacked relationship with interleaved spacing rings on the base member. The stack of blade discs is then secured together as by through bolts passing through aligned apertures in the blade discs. Thereafter, the rotor comprising the assembled blade discs and spacing rings is centered relative to the stator housing. The interconnected stator housing and assembled rotor are then lifted from the base member and moved to a horizontal position. The invention also includes apparatus for interconnecting the rotor and the stator during the assembly operation, and also includes a turbo-machine constructed in accordance with the above-described method.

Apparatus for the injection of fuel into a gas turbine which is adapted to remove the fuel from the injectors when the turbine is to be stopped. Each injector provides separate, parallel fuel flow paths from a pair of fuel inlet connections toward a plurality of atomizing apertures. When the turbine is to be stopped, one of the inlet connections is connected to a source of compressed air and the other is connected to a sump for the fuel.

Fuel flushing from injector for combustion chamber

An improved combustion chamber for devices such as gas turbines includes a flame tube having burners and a center tube extending through its end wall. The openings for the burners and the center tube are co-planar in the end wall to allow some angular movement of the flame tube relative to the center tube. A bayonet joint between the flame tube and the center tube includes a spherical bearing surface to permit such angular movement but to prevent axial movement. A unique locking pin geometry is also disclosed.

Combustion chamber for gas turbine

Apparatus for washing the blades of the high-pressure compressor of a two-stage turbo-compressor. A spray tube is mounted radially outwardly of an aperture defined in the turbine casing, but is capable of being moved radially inwardly through the aperture so as to direct an axial stream of wash water into the high-pressure compressor in response to the build-up of water pressure in a supply line which acts upon a piston against the action of a spring. In the absence of water pressure, the spring maintains the spray tube in its normal position externally of the casing.
