Systems and methods for delivering a drug with a tracer or contrast agent are disclosed herein, as are systems and methods that generally involve CED devices with various features for reducing or preventing backflow. In some embodiments, CED devices include a tissue-receiving space disposed proximal to a distal fluid outlet. Tissue can be compressed into or pinched/pinned by the tissue-receiving space as the device is inserted into a target region of a patient, thereby forming a seal that reduces or prevents proximal backflow of fluid ejected from the outlet beyond the tissue-receiving space. In some embodiments, CED devices include a bullet-shaped nose proximal to a distal fluid outlet. The bullet-shaped nose forms a good seal with surrounding tissue and helps reduce or prevent backflow of infused fluid.

Drug delivery methods with tracer

A method for identifying target regions in a tissue for local drug delivery, where functional and/or structural anatomical data such as edema and/or resection cavity is captured by an imaging system, and where the anatomical data is evaluated by segmentation techniques such as region-growing-based methods with computer assistance to determine a margin around a resection cavity and/or the volume of edema, the margin and/or the volume of edema being the target tissue for local drug delivery.

Method for estimating the physiological parameters defining the edema induced upon infusion of fluid from an intraparenchymally placed catheter

A device, system and method deliver an agent to a soft mass, such as an area of the body, and more specifically the brain. One aspect includes creation of one or more channels, tunnels or grooves in tissue using a relatively small diameter, minimally-invasive stylet and then removing the stylet prior to infusion. The stylet-created channels become paths of increased hydraulic conductivity, through which the infusate will tend to flow and produce a predictable infusion pattern. Infusate will be carried into these channels with relatively low resistance, and then infuse outward from these channels into the surrounding tissue. By carefully positioning these channels, one can control and modify the preferred paths and duration of distribution.

Device and method for delivering therapeutic agents to an area of the body

A surgical alignment device is disclosed that is controlled remotely through the use of an actuator, where the actuator in turn controls at least one local adjustment device. The alignment device is suited for neurosurgery, although it is not exclusively limited to neurosurgery. The alignment device includes an insertion guide that is coupled to the local adjustment device, the insertion guide being used to guide a device such as a catheter into a patient. The alignment device may also be coupled to a control module such as a microcomputer that controls the orientation of the insertion guide in response to inputs from the surgeon as to a location of interest within the patient.

A medical device for delivering material through tissue into a defined area of a patient may comprise: a material delivery element through which the material may flow out of a delivery end; the delivery end having an opening that can be inserted through a surface of the tissue; and a sealing system proximal to the delivery end that can extend away from the material delivery element along the surface of the tissue and apply pressure to the tissue after the material delivery element has been inserted through the surface of the tissue. A physical barrier may be provided on the material delivery device to reduce back flow loss of delivered material.
