Magnetorheological formulations, processes for preparing the same and uses therefor, the formulations comprising: (a) an ionic liquid comprising anions and cations, and (b) dispersed magnetizable particles having a mean diameter of 0.1 to 500 &#x3bc;m; wherein the ionic liquid comprises one or more salts selected from the group consisting of 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium methylsulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium thiocyanate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, 1-ethyl-3-methylpyridinium ethylsulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethylsulfate and mixtures thereof.

The invention relates to a rheometer having a rotatable shaft () on which a rotor plate () is fastened, and having a measuring instrument () for measuring torques exerted on the rotor plate () by a substance () to be studied during rotation of the shaft (), a first measurement gap () for holding the substance () to be studied being formed between a first side () of the rotor plate () and a first shear face () and a second measurement gap () for holding the substance () to be studied being formed between a second side () of the rotor plate (), opposite the first side, and a second shear face (). The rheometer contains a magnet for generating a magnetic field in the first and second measurement gaps ().

A magnetorheological formulation which comprises at least one base oil, at least one magnetizable particle, a at least one dispersant and a at least one thixotropic agent is described.

A magnetorheological fluid essentially consists of magnetic particles which are coated with a polyelectrolyte and are suspended in a polar liquid. The fluid has a magnetorheological effect of more than 100 Pa, measured in a magnetic field of 100 kA/m.

.alpha.-Monoolefins are polymerized using a Ziegler catalyst system comprising (1) a transition metal catalyst component and (2) an organoaluminum catalyst component, in which (1) is a solid-phase product (VI) obtained by (1.1) first combining (1.1.1) an inorganic oxidic substance (I), as the carrier, with (1.1.2) a solution (II) consisting of (IIa) an organic solvent and (IIb) a transition metal composition to form a suspension (III), evaporating down this suspension to form a solid-phase intermediate (IV), and (1.2) then (1.2.1) combining the solid-phase intermediate (IV), obtained from (1.1), with (1.2.2) a solution of an organoaluminum compound (V) to form a suspension, the resulting suspended solid-phase product (VI) being the transition metal catalyst component (1).
