A flat or curved photochromic laminate structure and a plastic photochromic lens blank can be produced in a simple and efficient manner from relatively low-cost polymeric sheet materials. These laminates can be used to provide goggles, face shields, windows, window coverings, skylights, and optical lenses having efficient, uniform and high quality photochromic properties. The use of a polyesterurethane as the binder for the photochromic material has been found to improve the performance of the photochromic material. There may be a desire to have a protective exterior layer (e.g., an abrasion resistant layer) in combination with the lens system, but that may be provided in various methods. In the case of using the laminate in a goggle application, the laminate may be hard coated on one or both outer surfaces with an abrasion resistant coating, antireflective coating, and/or an anti-fog hard coating.

Disclosed is a process to rapidly spin-apply an AR coating system to a backside of a prescription lens. The AR coating system comprises a polyurethane primer layer, a siloxane thermally cured scratch resistant coating layer, a two-layer sol-gel AR coating, and a hydrophobic layer. The process comprising steps of spin-applying each of the layers provides a quick way to furnish a prescription lens that is AR coated on both sides.

The temporary protection of polymeric articles, particularly polymeric articles with optical qualities such as ophthalmic lenses formed by the lamination of individual lens blanks, can be effected by the application of protective polymeric compositions to the surface of the polymer article, the composition being applied as a dry film or coating a film on a surface of the polymeric article. The individual lens blank is prepared for lamination or coating by application of a selective solvent to the polymeric film, the selective solvent dissolving, dispersing or otherwise removing the protective polymeric film but neither reacting with, etching or dissolving the composition of the polymeric article. The solvent even may comprise water or aqueous solutions (especially pH 8.0 to 12), although C1 to C5 alcohols and alkylene glycol ethers may also be used as the solvent.

Aminosilane coating composition and process for producing coated articles

It is difficult to provide abrasion resistance coatings with both good coatability, optical clarity and the ability to be tinted after application of the coating to a transparent substrate, such as an ophthalmic lens. An abrasion-resistant coating that adheres well to the substrate and is clear, transparent, colorless, and free of visible specks comprises a solvent, an epoxy resin composition, an aminosilane, and an hydrocarbyltrihydrocarboxysilane, such as an alkyltrialkoxysilane. The aminosilane may be a partially hydrolyzed aminosilane that is effectively blocked from reacting with the epoxy resin composition at ambient temperature. The coating composition is applied to the substrate and then treated to remove any block from the hydrolyzable aminosilane such that the aminosilane and the epoxy resin composition react to form an abrasion-resistant coating. The coating is also controllably tintable and is strongly adherent to the substrate even after tinting or exposure to heat and humidity.

The removal of certain reaction impurities in the manufacture of polysulfone polymers has been found to reduce the undesirable coloration in the final resin. Control of synthesizing reactions, manufacturing processes, and/or purification of specific ingredients assists in the removal of specific, undesirable impurities. The yellowness index, as determined by ASTM D1925 or ASTM E313, in the commercial grades of polysulfone resins has consistently been well above 1.0 for commercial polysulfone resins. The present invention provides polysulfone polymers after processing (e.g., injection molding) where the yellowness index is below 1.00, below 0.75, below 0.50, and even below 0.25.
