A power supply includes a controller. The controller controls switching of a first switch and a second switch in a power supply to regulate conveyance of energy from a primary winding of a transformer to a secondary winding of the transformer to generate an output voltage. To control generation of the output voltage, the controller receives a first signal generated at a first node coupling the first switch and the second switch. As discussed herein, the controller controls activation of the first switch to an ON state depending on a magnitude of the first signal. This disclosure provides improved reliability of power supply components (such as one or more switches) because such components are no longer stressed (or overstressed) due to body diode cross conduction.

Disclosed is a power converter circuit and a method for operating the power converter circuit. The power converter circuit includes at least one converter stage and a control circuit. The at least one converter stage includes an input configured to receive an input power, an output configured to supply an output power, a first electronic switch, and a first inductor coupled to the first electronic switch. The control circuit includes a hysteresis controller configured to drive the first electronic switch based on a current measurement signal representing a current through the inductor, a first threshold signal, and a second threshold signal, and an operating point controller configured to detect an operating point of the converter stage to generate the first threshold signal and the second threshold signal based on the detected operating point.

An AC/DC converter is operative to receive, via AC input terminals, an AC input signal and to transform the AC input signal into a DC output signal. The AC/DC converter comprises a first DC discharge circuit coupled to AC input terminals. The controller comprises a second DC discharge circuit having a controllable switching element for switching the second DC discharge circuit on and off. The second DC discharge circuit is operative to receive a DC discharge current from the first DC discharge circuit; logic associated with the AC/DC converter repeatedly: receives a DC sense signal from the second DC discharge circuit and determines, based on the value of the DC sense signal within a predetermined measurement time period, loss of the AC input signal. In response to determining loss of the AC input signal, the logic controls activation of the second DC discharge circuit depending on the DC sense signal.

Voltage converter controllers, voltage converter systems and corresponding methods are provided. In normal operation, a voltage converter stage of the system is controlled based on a feedback voltage from an output. In a low power mode, the system is controlled based on a supply voltage provided to a controller of the system.

A power supply as described herein includes a voltage converter, main controller, and a bias controller. The voltage converter including a primary stage and a secondary stage. The controller is operable to control regulation of an output voltage from the secondary stage based on a received feedback signal. As its name suggests, the output voltage from the secondary stage powers a load. During certain load conditions, the bias controller maintains (via novel biasing) a magnitude of a power supply voltage above a bias threshold value. More specifically, the bias controller is operable to prevent the power supply voltage from falling below the bias threshold value, preventing an under voltage lockout condition such that the controller is able to quickly continue conveyance of sufficient energy from the first stage to the second stage when the load increases a rate of consuming power provided by the output voltage.

Techniques are described to adjust the time when a switch is turned on from the time of one voltage valley to the time of another voltage valley for controlling an average load current or average load voltage. In some examples, the adjustment is instantaneous, and in some examples, the adjustment is gradual. Both of these example techniques provide for high switching efficiency of the switch.

In accordance with an embodiment, a method, includes operating a power converter that comprises an electronic switch connected in series with an inductor in one of a first operation mode and a second operation mode. Operating the power converter in each of the first operation mode and the second operation mode includes driving the electronic switch in a plurality of successive drive cycles based on drive parameter. Each of the plurality of drive cycles includes an on-time in which the electronic switch is switched on and an off-time in which the electronic switch is switched off.

In accordance with an embodiment, a method includes disabling a first electronic switch connected in series with a primary winding of a transformer in a power converter circuit if an auxiliary voltage across an auxiliary winding of the transformer is outside a predefined voltage range. The power converter circuit further includes a secondary winding of the transformer, and a rectifier circuit connected between the secondary winding and an output, where the rectifier circuit comprises a second electronic switch.

In accordance with an embodiment, a method of operating a switched-mode power converter includes defining at least one of a minimum switching frequency threshold and a maximum switching frequency threshold; detecting valleys occurring in a voltage over the switching element when the switching element is in an off-state; and either in a quasi-resonant mode, switching the switching element on when an nth consecutive valley occurs, n being an integer equal to or greater than one, so that the actual switching frequency is at least one of: below the maximum switching frequency threshold and above the minimum switching frequency threshold, or in a forced switching frequency mode, switching the switching element on so that the actual switching frequency is the maximum or the minimum switching frequency.

Switched-mode power conversion

In accordance with an embodiment, a method of operating a switched-mode power converter includes driving a switching element in successive drive cycles, in which the switching element is driven to switch on for an on-period and subsequently driven to switch off for an off-period; sampling a feedback signal two or more times during the drive cycles, where the feedback signal includes a signal representative of an operation parameter of the switched-mode power converter and noise. The method further includes filtering the sampled feedback signal to extract the signal representative of the operation parameter from the sampled feedback signal and controlling the switching element according to the filtered feedback signal.

An example relates to a method for operating a converter comprising (i) determining whether a valley for switching the converter in a quasi-resonant mode is available within a predetermined time range; (ii) selecting the valley if it is available within the predetermined time range; and (iii) changing the mode for operating the converter if the valley is not available within the predetermined time range.

A method of cycle-by-cycle operation of a switched-mode power converter includes converting an input voltage at the primary side to an output voltage at the secondary side by switching a transistor connected to the primary side from an on-state to an off-state during the present cycle, detecting valleys in a voltage across the transistor in the off-state, determining which valley at which the transistor is to be switched from the off-state to the on-state in the next switching cycle, and determining a maximum peak current limit for the primary side above which the transistor is switched from the on-state to the off-state in the next switching cycle. The maximum peak current limit is determined as a function of the input voltage and the valley at which the transistor is to be switched from the off-state to the on-state in the next switching cycle. Forced valley switching techniques are also disclosed.
