A method for converting an alcohol to a hydrocarbon, the method comprising contacting said alcohol with a metal-loaded zeolite catalyst at a temperature of at least 100° C. and up to 550° C., wherein said alcohol can be produced by a fermentation process, said metal is a positively-charged metal ion, and said metal-loaded zeolite catalyst is catalytically active for converting said alcohol to said hydrocarbon.

Scaffolding apparatus cooperates with a flooring structure of a building which has rim joists and floor joists. The scaffolding apparatus includes a sleeve which is inserted through an aperture in a rim joist and connected to the rim joist. A platform support arm for supporting a platform is inserted into the sleeve and removably locked in place. The sleeve is prevented from moving upward under a platform load by at least one of the floor joists. The scaffolding apparatus can either be installed perpendicular to or parallel with the floor joists.

Zeolitic catalytic conversion of alochols to hydrocarbons

A method for converting an alcohol to a hydrocarbon fraction having a lowered benzene content, the method comprising: converting said alcohol to a hydrocarbon fraction by contacting said alcohol, under conditions suitable for converting said alcohol to said hydrocarbon fraction, with a metal-loaded zeolite catalyst catalytically active for converting said alcohol to said hydrocarbon fraction, and contacting said hydrocarbon fraction with a benzene alkylation catalyst, under conditions suitable for alkylating benzene, to form alkylated benzene product in said hydrocarbon fraction. Also described is a catalyst composition useful in the method, comprising a mixture of (i) a metal-loaded zeolite catalyst catalytically active for converting said alcohol to said hydrocarbon, and (ii) a benzene alkylation catalyst, in which (i) and (ii) may be in a mixed or separated state. A reactor for housing the catalyst and conducting the reaction is also described.

Catalytic conversion of alcohols to hydrocarbons with low benzene content

An improved air purification adsorbent is disclosed. The air purification adsorbent comprises titanium dioxide (TiO) impregnated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2). The adsorbent may be used in air purification systems for removing ammonia from air streams. The nanocrystalline (amorphous) structure of the adsorbent results in a higher density of surface defects, higher surface area, and higher reactivity which, when combined with the synergistic effect of ZnCland the nanocrystalline TiO, provides a significantly longer breakthrough time of ammonia as compared with breakthrough time from unimpregnated nanocrystalline TiO, the commercial (crystalline) TiOimpregnated with ZnCl, pure ZnCL, and other commercially available adsorbents of ammonia. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Adsorbent for removal of ammonia from air streams

To achieve the removal of a broad spectrum of chemical hazards, multiple layers of impregnated activated carbon and nanocrystalline materials are incorporated into the adsorbent bed. For optimum performance using the least amount of material, a two-layer configuration is used. The top layer consists of a homogeneous mixture of an MgO/CaO based nanocrystalline material (e.g., Mg/Ca) and Kureha or other petroleum pitch-based bead shaped activated carbon impregnated treated with phosphoric acid. The bottom layer is comprised of a single layer of Calgon URC carbon. The volume ratios of the components are 9:5:11 Mg/Ca, phosphoric acid treated Kureha carbon, and URC, respectively. The new configuration leads to a 30% reduction in size of the existing NIOSH CBRN CAP 1 cartridge. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Multilayered mixed bed filter for the removal of toxic gases from air streams and methods thereof

An exhaust cooling device () is provided for an exhaust pipe () of a combustion process. The cooling device () includes a tubular housing () having an upstream portion () and a downstream portion (), with the upstream portion () having a necked-down section () tapered in an upstream direction, and a plurality of openings () formed in the necked-down section () to allow an ambient air flow from an exterior of the tubular housing () to an interior of the tubular housing (). The cooling device () further includes a nozzle element () fixed in the necked-down section () to direct an exhaust gas flow into the tubular housing ().

A device for connecting a placard to the rearview mirror of a motor vehicle includes a hanger which connects to the stem of the rearview mirror. A placard holder has a first jaw and an opposite second jaw, the first and second jaws are shaped and dimension to removably receive the placard. The placard holder is removably connectable to the hanger. In embodiments of the invention, the placard holder is magnetically connected to the hanger, and the jaws of the placard holder are magnetically urged together to hold the placard.

Device for connecting a placard to the rearview mirror of a motor vehicle and method of use

A process for screening an expression library to identify clones expressing enzymes having a desired activity is provided. The process involves first generating from genomic DNA samples of one or more microorganisms an expression library comprising a plurality of recombinant cell clones, and then introducing into capillaries in a capillary array a substrate and at least a subset of the clones, either individually or as a mixture. Interaction of the substrate and a clone expressing an enzyme having the desired activity produces an optically detectable signal, which can then be spatially detected to identify capillaries containing clones producing such a signal. The signal-producing clones can then be recovered from the identified capillaries.

Capillary array-based enzyme screening

Disclosed is a process for identifying clones having a specified activity of interest, which process comprises (i) generating one or more expression libraries derived from nucleic acid directly isolated from the environment; and (ii) screening said libraries utilizing a fluorescence activated cell sorter to identify said clones. More particularly, this is a process for identifying clones having a specified activity of interest by (i) generating one or more expression libraries derived from nucleic acid directly or indirectly isolated from the environment; (ii) exposing said libraries to a particular substrate or substrates of interest; and (iii) screening said exposed libraries utilizing a fluorescence activated cell sorter to identify clones which react with the substrate or substrates. Also provided is a process for identifying clones having a specified activity of interest by (i) generating one or more expression libraries derived from nucleic acid directly or indirectly isolated from the environment; and (ii) screening said exposed libraries utilizing an assay requiring co-encapsulation, a binding event or the covalent modification of a target, and a fluorescence activated cell sorter to identify positive clones.

High throughput screening for novel Bioactivities

Provided are methods of screening and identification of bioactivities and bioactive molecules of interest using a capillary array system. More specifically, disclosed are methods of using optical detection and capillary array-based techniques for screening libraries and recovering bioactive molecules having a desired activity or a nucleic acid sequence encoding such bioactive molecules.
