A portable radio telephone handset includes the capability of operating as a data transfer terminal as well as an analog cellular telephone subscriber station. Two modes of operation are available in the handset, an analog cellular communication mode and a Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) mode. A paging function for incoming analog cellular communication is carried out on a CDPD channel. The handset distinguishes between paging signals identifying CDPD mode communications and paging signals identifying analog cellular communications. The handset automatically preempts CDPD communications in favor of analog cellular communications such as those carried out in an AMPS configuration. To maintain the security of the handset ID, AMPS communications can be set up and controlled using CDPD control channels.

An improved user interface for a cellular telephone system subscriber unit, including the following functions: (1) a predictive keyboard input method for speeding up input on a telephone with a space limited keyboard; (2) a word completion method for speeding up input; (3) a distinctive signaling method useful in a dual-mode or tri-mode cellular phone system that incorporates both voice call functionality and data messaging functionality; (4) a secret message method that permits secret messages to be received by an authorized user of a cellular telephone that includes a data messaging capability; (5) a message screening method that permits a user to set a message screening mode in a cellular telephone; (6) an improved &ldquo;scratchpad&rdquo; method which permits a user to enter a telephone number into a storage register of a cellular telephone while in the middle of a voice call, visually verify the entry, and then save the number to a rapid redial location for later use; (7) a global search method for searching text strings in all of the different memory sections of a cellular telephone having an address book, a hierarchical menu structure, and stored data messages.

A base station in a subscriber communication network for communicating signals between subscriber stations and an external communication network having a plurality of ports. The base station includes a communication circuit for enabling simultaneous communications between a plurality of the ports and a plurality of subscriber stations over a given communication channel having multiple sequentially repetitive time slots; a remote-connection processor for directing communications between the time slot assigned to a given subscriber station and a given external communication network port; and an exchange for connecting the communication circuit to the external communication network ports. The exchange includes a central concentrator for directing signals from predetermined external network ports to predetermined sequentially repetitive time slots in a bit stream generated by the central concentrator, and for directing signals to predetermined external network ports from predetermined sequentially repetitive time slots in a bit stream received by the central concentrator; and the remote-connection processor directs signal transfer between given sequentially repetitive time slots of the bit streams and given sequentially repetitive time slots of the communication channel. The remote-connection processor includes a remote concentrator for directing signals from predetermined remote ports to predetermined sequentially repetitive time slots in a bit stream generated by the remote concentrator and transmitted to the central concentrator, and for directing signals to predetermined remote ports from predetermined sequentially repetitive time slots in the bit stream generated by the central concentrator.
