Textile yarns are treated with a sizing composition which, when dried and cured, remains durably bound to the yarn throughout wet finishing operations and subsequent use. The sizing composition comprises an aqueous self-crosslinking emulsion copolymer derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a latent-crosslinking monomer. The sizing composition may also include a water soluble or dispersible film forming polymer and a reactive resin. The durable size coating beneficially contributes to both the physical and the aesthetic properties of the yarn and fabrics formed therefrom.

Vinyl ester copolymer aqueous emulsion wood adhesives are provided using an emulsion copolymer having a T.sub.g of at least 10.degree. C. and containing at least 80% of vinyl ester and from 0.2-6% of monomer containing the ##STR1## group, the monomers being emulsified during copolymerization by from 0.5 to 10% of hydroxy functional protective colloid to provide particles having an average particle size in excess of 0.3 micron, and at least 3% of plasticizer is incorporated in the emulsion to insure room temperature coalescence.

Aqueous adhesive emulsions based on aqueous emulsion copolymers of vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, especially with ethylene, are provided with improved solvent insolubility and adhesion characteristics in the presence of hydroxy functional protective colloid which is present during the copolymerization, by the inclusion in the copolymer of a monoethylenic carbamate, especially allyl carbamate.

Vinyl ester emulsion copolymers are modified to introduce improved thermosetting cure capacity by including in the copolymer a proportion of a formaldehyde addition product with an allyl carbamate. These emulsions are useful as binders for fibers in non-woven fabrics where the improved cure confers superior resistance to home laundering in aqueous detergent solutions.

Aqueous emulsions adapted for application to textile fabrics and which provide improved water and soil resistance are supplied using aqueous emulsion copolymers of nonreactive monoethylenically unsaturated monomers providing a T.sub.g below about 20.degree. C. with from 0.5% to 20% of reactive monoethylenically unsaturated monomer providing active hydrogen, preferably OH and most preferably the ##STR1## AND FROM 1 TO 40% OF A TERMINAL-BLOCKED LOWER ALKYL HYDROGEN POLYSILOXANE HAVING A VISCOSITY OF FROM 20 TO 1000 CP at 20.degree. C. In preferred practice, from 0.5 to 4% of the polysiloxane is used, and at least 50% of the copolymer is vinyl acetate.

Copolymerizable monoethylenic phosphites are produced by reacting an N-methylol allyl carbamate with a stoichiometric excess of a trialkyl phosphite. The monoethylenic phosphonate product can be copolymerized, especially with N-methylol acrylamide in water solution to provide water solutions of copolymers which cure at low temperature on cellulosic fabrics to provide fire retardancy and the phosphorus provided in this fashion resists removal by washing and dry cleaning.
