A handheld personal care device having one or more light emitting elements and one or more light receiving elements is disclosed. Each of the light receiving elements is configured to receive light and output a respective measurement signal representing measurements of the received light. The handheld personal care device also has a control unit to estimate a position and/or an orientation of the device relative to a subject. The light emitting elements and the light receiving elements are arranged on the device such that, depending on the position and/or the orientation of the device relative to the subject, at least one of the light receiving elements can receive light emitted by at least one of light emitting elements and reflected by a reflective surface in the environment of the subject. The control unit estimates the position and/or the orientation of the device relative to the subject based on an analysis of the respective measurement signals of the light receiving elements.

Handheld personal care device and a method of estimating a position and/or an orientation of a handheld personal device relative to a subject

According to an aspect, there is provided a method of determining a position and/or orientation of a hand-held device with respect to a subject. The hand-held device is for use on a body of the subject. The method comprises receiving () images from an imaging unit arranged in or on the hand-held device; receiving () a displacement signal from a displacement sensor that is arranged in or on the hand-held device to measure displacement of the hand-held device along the body when the hand-held device is in contact with the body; processing () the received images to determine whether a body part of the subject can be identified in the received images; determining () whether the hand-held device is in contact with the body; determining () a mode of operation to use to determine a position and/or orientation of the hand-held device based on whether a body part can be identified and whether the hand-held device is in contact with the body; wherein the mode of operation to use is determined as (i) a first mode when a body part can be identified, (ii) a second mode when a body part cannot be identified and the hand-held device is not in contact with the body, and (iii) a third mode when the hand-held device is in contact with the body; and determining () the position and/or orientation of the hand-held device with respect to the body of the subject using the received images and/or received displacement signal according to the determined mode of operation.

Method of determining a position and/or orientation of a hand-held device with respect to a subject, a corresponding apparatus and a computer program product

There is provided a method for operating a personal care device. The method comprises obtaining, using an imaging device, image data relating to a portion of a body of a user; measuring, using the image data, a parameter relating to at least one hair growing from the portion of the body; and determining a position of the portion of the body on the body based on the measured parameter and a predetermined relation between the parameter and the position on the body. Operating a personal care device

A device for RF skin treatment includes an outer electrode arranged on an operational side of the device. The outer electrode has an annular or equilateral polygonal shape. An inner electrode is arranged at a center of the outer electrode and is surrounded by the outer electrode. A method of treating a skin tissue area () having a skin surface () is provided. Skin treatment method and apparatus

A device for radio frequency (RF) skin treatment of skin of a user is provided. The device comprises an active electrode and a return electrode. The device further comprises an RF generator arranged to supply RF energy to the user's skin via the active electrode and the return electrode. The return electrode has a planar skin contact surface extending in a main plane. The active electrode has a skin contact surface with a maximum dimension in a range from 100 &#x3bc;m to 500 &#x3bc;m, and a surface area of the planar skin contact surface of the return electrode is at least 5 times larger than a surface area of the skin contact surface of the active electrode. The skin contact surface of the active electrode is arranged in a position at a distance from the main plane, seen in a direction perpendicular to the main plane. The device may be advantageously used, for example, to control the dimensions and shape of a thermal lesion in the user's skin generated by the RF energy.

Device for radio-frequency skin treatment

The invention relates to a skin treatment device () for fractional treatment of the skin () of a human being. A radiation source () emits a multi-mode laser beam () with a superposition () of mutually different higher-order laser modes. The multi-mode laser beam is configured by said superposition of different laser modes to simultaneously cause a first plurality of high-intensity zones, where the thermal threshold (TC) for collagen denaturation for the treatment zone () of the skin is at least reached, and a second plurality of low-intensity zones where the thermal threshold (TF) for fibroblast stimulation for the treatment zone of the skin is at least reached. This is advantageous for obtaining a skin treatment device with a simple and therefore low-cost fractional laser skin treatment system for combined collagen denaturation and fibroblast stimulation. The skin treatment device is based on non-uniform laser radiation in the form of the multi-mode laser beam.

Skin treatment device

A device for skin treatment includes a non-circular symmetrical outer electrode and at least two inner electrodes surrounded by the outer electrode. An RF generator is arranged to supply an RF voltage between the inner electrodes and the outer electrode. If the outer electrode has two or more axes of symmetry, then each of the inner electrodes is at an equal minimum distance from the outer electrode and an equal distance from a common point of intersection of all axes of symmetry and is positioned, with respect to each of the respective axes of symmetry, either on the respective axis of symmetry or at a distance from the respective axis of symmetry and symmetrically relative to one of the other inner electrodes.

Radio frequency skin treatment device

The skin treatment device () further comprises a controller () configured and arranged to consecutively activate the impedance measurement circuit () and the treatment settings determiner () before treatment of the inner region (), configure the r.f. generator () to provide the r.f. treatment signal according to the treatment settings, and activate the r.f. generator () to apply the r.f. treatment signal to the inner region () for the treatment duration (T). The invention is based on the insight obtained from multiple measurements made during the creation of microscopic thermal lesions in an inner region of skin by applying r.f. measurement and treatment signals. By analyzing the histological and heating results, a relationship was obtained between the initial impedance (Z), the dimension of the r.f. treatment electrode (), and the treatment settings required to obtain a particular skin treatment result. This relationship has been found to be relatively constant for different subjects, different treatment locations on the body and different skin moisture contents. The invention makes it possible to preset or predetermine, i.e. in advance, the treatment duration (T) and/or the r.f. electrical parameters associated with the r.f. treatment signal accurately enough to avoid undesired skin damage during the treatment. The device can be simpler, as it is no longer essential to continuously monitor the impedance during treatment to determine the onset of undesired skin damage, such as ablation, which is the safety feature known from conventional devices.

Non-invasive skin treatment device using r.f. electrical current with a treatment settings determiner

The invention provides a non-invasive device () for treatment of skin tissue using laser light, and it provides a method and a computer program product. The non-invasive device comprises a light emission system () for generating a first laser pulse () and a subsequent second laser pulse () at a predefined time delay (&#x394;T) after the first laser pulse. The non-invasive device further comprises an optical system () for focusing, in use, the first laser pulse and the second laser pulse at a treatment location () inside the skin tissue (). The first laser pulse comprises a first power density, a first pulse duration and a first pulse energy for initiating a plasma () at the treatment location. The subsequent second laser pulse comprises a second power density being lower than the first power density and a second pulse duration being at least 10 times longer than the first pulse duration, and a second pulse energy higher than the first pulse energy for sustaining or intensifying the plasma initiated by the first laser pulse, whereby in use the first laser pulse and the second laser pulse together induce Laser Induced Optical Breakdown at the treatment location.

Non-invasive device for treatment of the skin using laser light

The invention relates to a device () for RF skin treatment, comprising an active electrode () arranged on an operational side () of the device and having a first skin contact surface for contact with a skin of a user, which first skin contact surface has a largest cross-sectional dimension smaller than or equal to 2 mm. The device comprises a return electrode () arranged on the operational side () of the device and having a second skin contact surface for contact with the skin of the user, wherein an area of the second skin contact surface is at least five times larger than an area of the first skin contact surface. An RF generator () is arranged to supply an RF treatment voltage between the active electrode () and the return electrode () so as to heat a skin region below the active electrode, wherein the RF treatment voltage has a frequency in a range of 100 MHz-3 GHz. By using a frequency of the RF treatment voltage in said range, a depth of thermal lesions voltage is considerably increased as compared to RF skin treatment devices using a comparable RF treatment voltage, but at a much lower frequency.
