A parking brake actuator includes a mounting bracket, a cover plate. A brake operating assembly includes a lever and a locking sector gear. A locking clutch spring assembly includes a pinion rivet, a shaft, a flange, first and second tubular portions and a pinion with a plurality of teeth. A torsion spring is wrapped about the first tubular portion and the pinion. A first leg of a release spring abuts a first arm of a release lever. A release cable is connected to a second arm of the release lever. A brake cable is connected to an adjusting sector gear, which is engageable with an adjusting clutch spring assembly.

A control pedal assembly for a motor vehicle includes a support structure, a pedal arm pivotally mounted to the support structure and carrying a pedal, and a sensor for detecting rotation of the pedal arm and sending an electrical signal to a control device indicating the rotation of the pedal arm. The pedal assembly also includes a hysteresis device adapted to generate a desired feel in response to pivotal movement of the pedal arm. The hysteresis device is secured to the support structure and includes a plunger engaging the pedal arm and is movable within a chamber between an extended position and a depressed position upon rotation of the pedal arm. A pair of coaxial compression springs resiliently bias the plunger to the extended position. The chamber forms a first friction surface and the plunger has a plurality of prongs forming a second friction surface engagable with the first friction surface to resist pivotal movement of the pedal arm. Friction between the first and second friction surfaces, that is resistance to movement of the plunger, increases as the plunger moves from the extended position toward the depressed position. Variable friction is obtained because the prongs form angled surfaces engaging the spring for wedging the prongs in a radially outward direction to engage the first and second friction surfaces together with increasing force as the springs are compressed.

A latching mechanism for selectively retaining a closure having a striker is provided that includes a housing forming a vertically extending groove for receiving the striker, first and second axles located on opposite sides of the groove, a striker spring located at the groove, a pawl pivotable about the first axle and defining a notch, and a ratchet pivotable about the second axle and defining a protrusion adapted to cooperate with the notch of the pawl to selectively retain the ratchet in a locked position. The ratchet defines a pocket for receiving the striker and retaining the striker in the groove when the ratchet is in the locked position. The housing is adapted to accept an over slam force from the striker at a bottom end of the groove. Preferably, the striker spring is substantially in-line with a path of the striker into the groove.

A latching mechanism for a closure of a motor vehicle compartment includes a housing forming a vertically extending groove for receiving a striker bar secured to the closure, first and second hollow rivets located on opposite sides of the groove, a striker spring located at the groove for upwardly biasing the striker bar out of the groove, a pawl pivotable about the first hollow rivet and defining a notch, and a ratchet pivotable about the second hollow rivet and defining a protrusion adapted to cooperate with the notch of the pawl to selectively retain the ratchet in a locked position. the ratchet also defines pocket for receiving the striker bar and retaining the striker bar in the groove when the ratchet is in the locked position. Fasteners extend though passageways in the hollow rivets to secure the latching mechanism to the motor vehicle. The striker spring is positioned to directly engage the striker bar when the striker bar is in the groove to bias the striker bar in a direction out of the groove. Adjustment means are preferably provided to adjust the position of the striker spring and therefore the force applied to the striker bar by the striker spring. The latching mechanism preferably further includes a hook pivotable about the first hollow rivet and defining a secondary catch for receiving the striker bar to retain the striker bar in the groove when exiting the ratchet pocket. A paddle is preferably provided to manually pivot the hook and release the striker bar from the secondary catch and the groove. The pawl preferably forms an internal stop which limits rotation of the ratchet when the striker is moving downward to directly transfer over slam forces to the vehicle structure through the hollow rivets and mounting fasteners.

An adjustable control pedal for a motor vehicle includes a link having an inclined slot formed therein, a screw supported by the link, a motor operatively connected to the screw to selectively rotate the screw about a central axis, and a nut threadably engaging the screw and adapted to move axially along the screw upon rotation of the screw. A pedal aim includes upper and lower pedal arms operatively connected for extension and retraction of the lower pedal arm relative to the upper pedal arm. The upper pedal arm is pivotally connected relative to the link. The lower pedal arm has a pedal at a lower end and a pin extending into the inclined slot. The pin is operatively connected to the nut so that the pin moves along the slot as the nut travels along the screw. The pedal arm rotates relative to the link and the lower pedal arm extends or retracts relative to the upper pedal arm as the pin moves along the inclined slot such that the pedal moves along a generally linear and horizontal path upon rotation of the screw. A second embodiment of the invention is disclosed which includes a link having first and second arcuate and inclined slots formed therein. A one-piece pedal arm is operatively connected to the nut. The pedal arm has a pedal at a lower end and first and second pins extending into the first and second inclined slots respectively so that the first and second pins move along the first and second slots respectively as the nut travels along the screw. The pedal arm rotates relative to the link as the first and second pins move along the first and second slots respectively such that the pedal moves along a generally linear and horizontal path upon rotation of the screw.
