A method of manufacturing an optical engine includes bonding a plurality of laser diodes directly or indirectly to a base substrate and coupling at least one laser diode driver circuit to the laser diodes. In operation the at least one laser diode driver circuit selectively drives current to the laser diodes. The method further includes bonding a plurality of collimation lenses to the base substrate proximate the plurality of laser diodes and bonding a cap including at least one wall and at least one optical window to the base substrate. The method also includes bonding a grating waveguide combiner proximate the optical window of the cap. In operation, the grating waveguide combiner receives a plurality of beams of light at a respective plurality of input grating couplers and combines the plurality of beams of light to provide a collimated aggregated beam of light at an output grating coupler.

Method of manufacturing a grating waveguide combiner for an optical engine

Systems, devices, and methods for tracking eye movement and gaze direction using infrared light are described. The method includes projecting infrared light from at least one pixel in the display screen to the eye of the user, detecting a plurality of reflections of the infrared light from the eye, determining the relative intensity of each of the plurality of the reflections, identifying, from the plurality of reflections, a region of the eye that corresponds to a relatively low intensity reflection, and determining a position of the eye based on the region of the eye that corresponds to the relatively low intensity reflection.

Systems, devices, and methods for an infrared emitting display

Systems, devices, and methods of manufacturing optical engines and laser projectors that are well-suited for use in wearable heads-up displays (WHUDs) are described. Generally, the optical engines of the present disclosure integrate a plurality of laser diodes (e.g., 3 laser diodes, 4 laser diodes) within a single, hermetically or partially hermetically sealed, encapsulated package. Photonic integrated circuits having grating or edge couplers thereon may be used to wavelength multiplex beams of light emitted by the plurality of laser diodes into a coaxially superimposed aggregate beam. A waveguide medium having one or more directly written waveguides may couple light from laser diodes to a photonic integrated circuit, and may optionally hermetically or partially hermetically seal the laser diodes, eliminating the need for a separate seal. Such optical engines may have advantages over existing designs including, for example, smaller volumes, better manufacturability, faster modulation speed, etc. WHUDs that employ such optical engines and laser projectors are also described.

Directly written waveguide for coupling of laser to photonic integrated circuit

Grating waveguide combiner for optical engine

A circuit includes a circuit chip and a plurality of clock drivers external to the circuit chip. The circuit chip includes a plurality of isolated clocking subunits and a corresponding plurality of terminals. Each clocking subunit is electrically isolated from any other clocking subunit. Each clocking subunit is coupled to a respective terminal. For each of the plurality of terminals, an output from one and only one clock driver of the plurality of clock drivers is coupled to the corresponding terminal of the plurality of terminals, and inputs of all clock drivers are coupled together.

Arrangements of clock line drivers

A control structure for stage selection in a CCD sensor includes a well formed in a substrate and a channel formed in the well, the channel defining a channel direction. A bus structure is disposed over the channel and oriented transversely to the channel direction, the bus structure including a plurality of uniformly spaced register element sets. The plurality of uniformly spaced register element sets includes a first register element set and a plurality of remaining register element sets. The first register element set includes a first clock signal conductor and at least one other clock signal conductor. Each set of the plurality of remaining register element sets includes a first clock signal conductor and at least one other clock signal conductor. The control structure further includes a connection structure to couple together the first clock signal conductor of each of the plurality of remaining register element sets while the first clock signal conductor of the first register element set is electrically isolated from the first clock signal conductor of each of the plurality of remaining register element sets. The connection structure further couples each clock signal conductor of the at least one other clock signal conductor of the first register element set to respective clock signal conductors of each set of the plurality of remaining register element sets.
