Devices, methods, and graphical user interfaces for document manipulation

In some implementations, a user device can generate configuration data for an application on the user device using multilevel configuration data. For example, an application on the user device can obtain application level configuration data from a server device. The application level configuration data can be generated based on user engagement segments associated with the user of the user device, for example. The application can obtain publisher level configuration data generated by a content publisher. In response to requesting a content item, the application can receive content level configuration data. The application can combine the application level configuration data, the publisher level configuration data, and/or the content level configuration data to generate dynamic configuration data. The dynamic configuration data can be used by the application to determine, among other things, what content to present to the user of the application on the user device.

An electronic device displays a view of a lower portion of a first column from a document. The document includes at least a first column and a second column. A first user input gesture is received by the electronic device. In some implementations, a server device can segment users based on user engagement with an application on a user device. For example, server device can receive user event data from many user devices indicating user activities with respect to the application and/or content presented by the application. The server device can generate user engagement segments based on the received user event data. The server device can generate predictive models for each user engagement segment based on the received user event data. The server device can determine which particular user engagement segments a particular user is associated with based on user event data associated with the particular user and/or the predictions generated by the predictive models. The application on the user device associated with the particular user can then be configured according to the user engagement segments associated with the particular user.

A system and method of providing sequential media content. The system of some embodiments provides a library that displays representations of media items stored on a device. The library displays representations of a series object. Activating the series object displays purchased media items in a series of media items. After a threshold amount of a media item in the series has been consumed, the series object displays a representation of a next media item in the series along with a control for purchasing the next media item in the series.

System and method for providing sequential media items

Methods and devices are provided. A method includes at an electronic device with one or more processors, a display, and memory, displaying, by the display, a playback position indicator for a media file; receiving, by the electronic device, a user input for adjusting a position of the playback position indicator from a first position of the media file to a second position of the media file; and in response to receiving the user input, displaying, by the display, a snippet from a document corresponding to content of the media file at the second position of the media file.

Aspects of the present disclosure involve a mobile or computer reader application that obtains articles or other computer files from a central database and displays the articles to a user of the device. The reader application may be customizable around one or more characteristics of the user of the device. In one embodiment, the type and number of articles provided to the device and displayed in the reader application may be based on the determination of a category or type of usage of the application is performed by the user. Further, the determination of the use of the reader application on the device is performed by and contained within the device such that usage information is not shared with overall article providing system. In another embodiment, the article providing system and/or device may determine recommendations to provide to a user of the reading application. These recommendations may be based on one or more selected interests or topics of the user of the reading application.

Reader application with a personalized feed and method of providing recommendations while maintaining user privacy

Aspects of the present disclosure involve a mobile or computer reader application that obtains articles or other computer files from a central database and displays the articles to a user of the device. In addition to providing the articles to the reader application, an article providing system may also determine the quality or popularity of particular articles and provide the most popular articles to users of the system. In one embodiment, the system may receive one or more anonymous interaction metrics from one or more devices connected to the system. The anonymous interaction metrics may be associated with a particular article and provide some indication of a user's engagement with the article. The system utilizes these interaction metrics or measurements to set or adjust a score or ranking associated with the particular article. The score may then be utilized by the system to rank the article in relation to other articles available through the system to provide the most popular or highest ranked articles to users of the system.

Aspects of the present disclosure may involve a computer implemented method of disambiguating a string from an article involving an electronic device including one or more hardware processing units, and accessing a disambiguation database comprising a plurality of string-entity combinations and associated metrics for each of the plurality of string-entity combinations. The associated metrics may include a metric associated with an arrival probability of linking at a web page for a particular entity after a specified number of links from a starting page. The method may involve generating a clique graph for each candidate entity of the article, and generating a probability that a particular candidate entity matches a particular string associated with the particular candidate entity as a function of score attributes generated from the clique graph and the arrival probability of linking at the page for the particular entity after the specified number of links.

Apparatus, system and method for string disambiguation and entity ranking

An electronic device displays text of an electronic document on a display; displays an insertion marker at a first position in the text of the electronic document; detects a first horizontal gesture on a touch-sensitive surface; in response to a determination that the first horizontal gesture satisfies a first set of one or more predefined conditions: translates the electronic document on the display in accordance with a direction of the first horizontal gesture, and maintains the insertion marker at the first position in the text; and, in response to a determination that the first horizontal gesture satisfies a second set of one or more predefined conditions, moves the insertion marker by one character in the text from the first position to a second position in the text in accordance with the direction of the first horizontal gesture.

Devices, methods, and graphical user interfaces for navigating and editing text

The present technology provides a less burdensome mechanism to bring media items owned or licensed in the physical world into an account hosted by an electronic media provider. A specific use case deals with magazine subscriptions wherein the electronic media provider can send entity identifying information to a publisher clearinghouse that has subscription data for many different magazines. If the entity information sufficiently matches subscription information, the clearinghouse sends back data identifying magazines for which the entity is entitled to a digital copy, and these magazines become available to the user through the electronic media provider.

Some embodiments provide a system for interacting with a web browser. During operation, the system establishes a network connection with the web browser from a portable electronic device. Next, the system provides data to the web browser using a web server on the portable electronic device. Finally, the system sends a set of control instructions from the web server to the web browser, wherein the control instructions direct the web browser to obtain and display the data.
