The invention relates to novel cross-linkable monomers that may be polymerized with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers to form cross-linkable copolymers. Said copolymers may particularly be used in the form of aqueous dispersions as formaldehyde-free adhesives or as coatings with good water resistance. The cross-linkable monomer is a compound in acid or salt form comprising an anion of the formula (I) and one or more cations for producing electrical neutrality, where Rand Rrepresent, independently of one another, hydrogen alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, &#x2014;COOR, &#x2014;COOcator &#x2014;CON(RR), Rand Rrepresent, independently of one another, hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, catrepresents a monovalent cation, and one of the groups Ror Rmay also represent a group &#x2014;X&#x2014;R&#x2014;CR(OH)(SO&#x2014;), wherein X, R, and Rassume one of the meanings listed below, Rrepresents hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, X is selected from the group of direct C&#x2014;C bond, &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;NR&#x2014;, &#x2014;COO&#x2014; or &#x2014;CONR&#x2014;, Rrepresents hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, Rrepresents alkylene, polyoxyalkylene, cycloalkylene, or arylene, and Rrepresents hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl.

Cross-linkable monomers and polymers and the use thereof

Compositions containing an aqueous dispersion of selected polymers and selected polyaldehydes as crosslinking agents are described. Adhesives having very high resistance to boiling water can be produced from these formulations.

The invention relates to a method for reducing the amount of residual monomers in aqueous polymer dispersions means of chemical post-treatment. Post-treatment in the aqueous polymer dispersion is carried out by adding a redox system which contains a) 0.005-5 wt. % of an oxidation agent which contains an organic peroxide. and b) 0.005-5 wt. % of a reduction agent which contains sulfinic acids or salts thereof.
