The present invention is directed to a thermosetting coating composition for improving the scratch resistance, blush resistance, and lubricity of glass surfaces (e.g., glass bottles), and in certain instances also improving the label adhesion of coatings derived therefrom which comprises as functional ingredients a polyamine terminated polyepoxide adduct salt, an epoxy crosslinker, a reactive silane, a surfactant, and a natural or synthetic wax. The coating composition is carried in a vehicle which comprises water and a suitable co-solvent. The combination of the adduct salt and co-solvent permits the microemulsification of the epoxy crosslinker. The wax is also present in the emulsified state.

Glass bottle coating composition made from a salt of a polyamine

A process for preparing fine powder particles of thermoplastic elastomer polymer is disclosed. This process comprises suspending thermoplastic elastomer solids in a poor solvent for the polymer using mild agitation and then admixing this suspension with a non-solvent for the polymer in the presence of high shear mixing. Powder particles having an average diameter of less than about 100 microns are obtained.

Thermoplastic elastomer powder coatings

A non-tacky powder composition useful for coating applications is disclosed. A method of preparing the non-tacky powder composition is also disclosed. This powder composition comprises tacky powder particles and, adhering to the tacky surface of these tacky powder particles in a non-continuous layer, smaller solid particles which are hard and non-tacky. The tacky powder particles comprise a melt blend mixture of a thermoplastic elastomer and a specifically defined melt flow modifier. The smaller solid particles which are hard and non-tacky comprise a specifically defined melt flow modifier which has a glass transition temperature greater than about 20.degree. C. The final powder composition is non-tacky and is particularly useful in coating glass containers. A process for coating substrates such as a glass container with this composition, as well as the coated glass container, is also disclosed.

Method of powder coating a glass container and product produced

A powder composition having good melt flow under zero shear conditions is disclosed. A process for preparing this powder composition is also disclosed. The composition comprises a thermoplastic elastomer such as a block copolymer of styrene and hydrogenated butadiene as well as a melt flow modifier. The melt flow modifier is preferably a partially hydrogenated styrene/alpha methylstyrene random copolymer. The composition may additionally contain adhesion promoters and stabilizers against oxidation and ultraviolet light. A process for coating substrates such as a glass bottle with this composition, as well as the coated glass bottle, is also disclosed.

Powder composition and method of preparation

Method of powder coating a glass container

A non-tacky powder composition useful for coating applications is disclosed. A method of preparing the non-tacky powder composition is also disclosed. This powder composition comprises tacky powder particles and, adhering to the tacky surface of these tacky powder particles in a non-continuous layer, smaller solid particles which are hard and non-tacky. The smaller solid particles which are hard and non-tacky comprise a specifically defined melt flow modifier which has a glass transistion temperature greater than about 20.degree. C. The final powder composition is non-tacky and is particularly useful in coating glass containers. A process for coating substrates such as a glass container with this composition, as well as the coated glass container, is also disclosed.

A coated bottle comprising a bottle having an inner and an outer coating is disclosed. The inner coating applied to the external surface thereof is prepared from non-tacky composite powder particles which are made up of powder particles which have surface deposited thereon comparatively smaller solid particles which are hard and non-tacky. The tacky powder particles comprise a mixture of a thermoplatic elastomer, a specifically defined melt flow modifier, and an adhesion promoter. The smaller, hard particles comprise a specifically defined melt flow modifier which has a glass transition temperature of at least about 20.degree. C. The first coating is applied to the bottle, preferably by electrostatic spraying techniques, and the bottle with the particles is baked to form a smooth coating. An outer coating comprising certain particularly defined synthetic resins, particularly acrylic polymers, is then applied and the coated bottle is again baked until a smooth second coat is formed. The coated bottle is fragment retentive and this coating is not substantially removed or destroyed during the cleaning and sterilization procedures commonly employed by carbonated beverage bottling companies.

Coated bottle and method of coating

The present invention provides a process for preparing metal particle-containing powder coating compositions as well as the powder coating compositions produced by this process. The process involves spraying a solution which comprises solvent, resin, curing agent, and suspended metal particles to form droplets, and collecting the sprayed droplets in a liquid bath. The liquid bath contains a liquid which is miscible with the solvent but which is non-solvent for the solutes of the solution. The liquid bath is subjected to a radial motion. Thus the powder coating compositions are precipitated in substantially non-agglomerated form. The resulting metal particle-containing powder coating compositions are useful in powder coating applications such as powder painting when it is desired to impart a metallic finish to an article such as an automobile. These powder coating compositions are particularly useful when it is desired to impart to a surface a thin film, such as a coil coating.

Process for making porous metal containing powder coating compositions

There is disclosed a process for preparing shear degradable particle-containing resin powders. This process comprises (a) preparing a first composition comprising shear degradable particles and molten resin in the absence of high shearing forces on the particles, (b) intimately blending the first composition with a second composition comprising molten resin and curing agent to form a shear degradable particle-containing molten resin mixture in the absence of high shearing forces on the shear degradable particles, (c) solidifying this shear degradable particle-containing molten resin mixture, and (d) grinding the solidified mixture to desired particle size. The particles may then be classified according to particle size. The final powder particles contain shear degradable particles or flakes in substantially undegraded form. The powder particles are especially useful in powder coating applications such as in automobile and appliance topcoats.

Process for preparing shear degradable particle-containing resin powders

The metal platelets contained in a metal-containing powder coating composition may be oriented substantially parallel to a surface coated with this composition by the process herein described. This process comprises (a) coating the metal-containing powder coating composition on the surface, (b) heating the coated surface in order to melt the metal-containing powder coating composition, (c) simultaneous with the heating step, blowing a stream of hot fluid substantially parallel to the coated surface so as to orient the metal platelets substantially parallel to the surface, and (d) cooling the coated surface after the metal platelets have become oriented substantially parallel to the surface. Contoured surfaces coated in accordance with this process have an appearance of depth similar to that obtained using a solvent system metallic paint.
