In a device and a method for ignition of an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder is described, the device includes a central control unit and peripheral units, each being allocated to one cylinder, digital control signals being sent from the central control unit to the peripheral units, triggering the peripheral units to ignition of the respective cylinder, measured values describing states in the peripheral units being determined by the peripheral units and sent to the central control unit as a function of the measured values, at least one time difference between the control signals and the diagnostic signals being determined by the central control unit for analysis of the diagnostic signals.

Device and method for ignition in an internal combustion engine

A device for regulating the energy supply for the ignition of an internal combustion engine including an ignition coil and a central control unit, the ignition coil including a primary winding and an ignition power module connected to the primary winding. The central control unit ascertains a time difference between the beginning of current flow through the primary winding and the reaching of a first threshold value of the primary current, and in the light of the time difference, the central control unit determines an additional power loss of the ignition power module and/or active energy reduction, caused by interturn short circuits in the primary winding. When the additional power loss of the ignition power module exceeds a power loss threshold value, the ignition power module is switched off.

Device and method for regulating the energy supply for ignition in an internal combustion engine

A method for operating an internal combustion engine and a corresponding device are described, in which reference pulses are generated synchronously with respect to the cyclical movement of at least one part of the internal combustion engine. At least one event moment for the occurrence of at least one event is calculated by an output unit at specific, definitively preset time intervals of the cyclical movement. Moreover, an independent clock-pulse generator is provided which generates clock pulses, the interval of the clock pulses being independent of the movement, and the interval of the clock pulses being smaller than the interval of the reference pulses. The at least one event moment is expressed as the number of clock pulses of the independent clock-pulse generator, and the at least one event is triggered upon reaching the number of clock pulses. By observing the clock pulses of the independent clock-pulse generator counted between at least two successive reference pulses, a relationship value is formed which contains information about the future timing of the movement, this relationship value being used to alter the number of clock pulses.

Method for operating an internal combustion engine and corresponding arrangement

A method for regulating knocking in an internal combustion engine, particularly of a motor vehicle, has the following steps: determining a knocking combustion for a calculated first base ignition angle in one or more cylinders of the internal combustion engine originated from a previous operating condition; and setting a new, second base ignition angle taking into account the existing operating condition. A query concerning the relative sizes of a setpoint ignition angle for efficiency reduction and the first base ignition angle is provided for setting the second base ignition angle to allow for knocking regulation which is favorable to the operation. If the setpoint ignition angle is smaller than the base ignition angle, an ignition angle retardation is performed with an adjustment value that must be adjusted, and which is given by the sum of a previously determined, constant retardation value and an adjusted, variable retardation value.

Method for the knock regulation of an internal combustion engine, in particular on a motor vehicle

A device and a method are provided to, with the aid of a limiting module, advance the maximally retarded ignition angle by a value with respect to the static combustion limit. The timing advance of the maximally retarded ignition angle may be used to avoid uncontrolled combustions in the exhaust, so-called exhaust backfirings. Such exhaust backfirings may occur in dynamic operating states.

Device and method for determining the firing angle

An ignition control device for controlling an ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine, having an angle measuring device for measuring the current crank angle of the internal combustion engine and for outputting an equidistant angle pulse signal and an angle signal for indicating the respective beginning of a working cycle. The present invention relates to an ignition control device for the control of an ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine having an engine speed detection device for detecting the engine speed of the internal combustion engine at a detection instant within the ignition cycle of a given cylinder; a determination device for determining a predetermined ignition angle corresponding to the detected engine speed, a charging time corresponding to the detected engine speed and an appropriate start-of-charging angle; an ignition control value output device to output the start-of-charging angle and the charging time in a charging time output mode and to output the start-of-charging angle and the ignition angle in an ignition output mode to the ignition coil device; a detection device for detecting critical power loss states of the ignition control device driver stage in ignition angle output mode; and an ignition control mode determination device for selecting an ignition control mode from among the ignition angle mode output and charging time output mode for the ignition cycle; the ignition control mode determination device being configured in such a way that it selects charging time output mode if a critical power loss state of the ignition coil device driver stage is detected in ignition angle output mode.

An ignition control device for controlling a coil device for an internal combustion engine, having a speed measuring device for measuring the speed of the internal combustion engine at a measuring time point within the ignition segment of a specific cylinder; an evaluating device for determining a preestablished ignition angle corresponding to the measured speed, a preestablished charging time corresponding to the measured speed, and a corresponding initial charging angle; an ignition-control-value output device for outputting to the coil device the initial charging angle and the charging time in a charging-time output mode, and the initial charging angle and the ignition angle in an ignition-angle output mode; an error estimating device for estimating an error of the ignition angle in the charging-time output mode and/or an error of the charging time in the ignition-angle output mode, on the basis of a possible speed change after the measuring time point; and an ignition control mode determining device for determining an ignition control mode from the ignition-angle output and charging-time output modes for the ignition segment based on the estimated error.

A method for diagnosing an exhaust-gas recirculation system of an internal combustion engine provides that the fuel quantity, which is needed for a desired mixture composition, is computed, at least approximately, in a control apparatus from at least stored data of the EGR system. The stored data can be in the form of a through-flow characteristic line. Thereafter, the fuel quantity is corrected by a control factor in dependence upon the mixture composition. The control factor is computed and stored when the EGR system is switched on and the control factor is computed and stored when the EGR system is switched off. The difference of these control factors is then formed and compared to pregiven values. A fault signal is outputted in the event of a deviation.

Method for diagnosing an exhaust-gas recirculation system of an internal combustion engine

An ignition controller has a revolution rate detector, a crankshaft angle detector, a computer, a first read/write memory device for the computed ignition angles for all cylinders, an ignition cycle overlap detector, a FIFO memory for storing a computed ignition angle and a copier for copying the angle from the first memory to the second depending on the degree of overlap. An ignition output device outputs the ignition angle for the next cylinder to be ignited and the corresponding charging time and charging starting angle.
