Filaments are produced from polymers having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.7 measured in concentrated sulfuric acid and containing in the polymer chain at least 50 percent of the repeating units: ##STR1## by melting the polymer and heating the melt to a temperature of from about 20.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. above the melting point of the polymer, passing the melt through a filter pack having a filtering area of at least about 8 in.sup.2 and a total volume of at least about 1.2 in.sup.3 per pound of polymer extruded per hour, and containing inert, irregularly shaped particles having a mesh size of about 25 to 140 to provide a pressure drop at least about 800 psig., extruding the melt through spinning openings of desired shape to form filaments and passing the filaments immediately upon extrusion through a heating zone maintained at a temperature of about 200.degree. to 320.degree. C. and having a length of about 3 to 12 inches. The process is capable of producing fibers and yarns having a dpf of about 2.8 to just below 15, a tenacity of about 1 to 4.5 grams per denier, an elongation at break of about 15 to 200 percent and a modulus of about 20 to 80 grams per denier.

Aromatic polyetherketone multifilament yarns

Organometallic preceramic polymers are melt spun into fibers utilizing a spinning apparatus which directs the preceramic polymer from a stagnant melt pool of said polymer to a spinneret. The spinneret is one used for solvent spinning and, thus, has a shorter residence time during extrusion through the spinneret orifice than conventional melt spinning spinnerets.

Process for spinning preceramic polymers

Process of making an aromatic polyetherketone fiber product

A process is provided wherein a polymer blend of a poly(butylene terephthalate) and about 5 to 25% by weight of poly(ethylene terephthalate) is melt spun to form a fiber or yarn which is then drawn at an elevated temperature resulting in the poly(butylene terephthalate) having a stable beta crystal form in relaxed condition. The fiber or yarn may then be subjected to a heat relaxation treatment which changes the crystal form of the poly(butylene terephthalate) from the beta to the alpha form resulting in some shrinkage of the fiber or yarn and causing it to have a greater degree of stretchability.

Process for making polyester blend fiber

Finish liquid is applied to a bundle of running filamentary material by running the bundle of filamentary material in monolayer form through a passage and conducting finish liquid under pressure through at least two side-by-side capillaries each having a diameter less than 0.06 inches. The finish liquid is discharged through outlet ends of the capillaries and onto the running monolayer of filamentary material. Preferably, the capillaries are separated by a divider wall which terminates short of the outlet ends of the capillaries, whereby those outlet ends define a slot through which the finish liquid is discharged. The slot preferably has end portions which are narrower than a center portion of the slot.
