The invention relates to a positional fixing of a tab on a sheet metal lid comprising a panel () and a seamable edge () surrounding said panel, suitable for attaching to a can body. On the panel (), an openable area is defined by a weakening line (), and outside said openable area (), a tab () is provided at a mounting place (). Said tab () comprises a grip portion (), an opening portion (), and an attaching portion (), said latter being provided for attaching said tab substantially parallel with respect to said panel (). Said tab () as attached is disposed with its opening portion () above said openable area (). Close to at least one edge () of the attaching portion (), a strip-shaped projection () is shaped to protrude out of said panel (), for limiting a pivoting movement (&#x3b1;) of said tab () around said mounting place ().

The invention relates to a method for forming a sheet metal lid. At least one projection is formed twice. First, the projection is shaped from a panel of the sheet metal lid, the pre-form being located near an attaching portion of a tab, but at a distance from the mounting place. Second, at least a front edge of the pre-form of the at least one projection is re-formed. No score line is provided in the panel, neither during shaping, nor during re-forming. An improved blocking for an outer edge portion of the attaching portion is thus obtained, the outer edge portion being associated with the front edge.
