A recording head comprises a write pole extending to an air-bearing surface. A near-field transducer is positioned proximate a first side of the write pole in a down-track direction. A heatsink structure is proximate the near-field transducer and positioned between the near-field transducer and the write pole. The heatsink structure extends beyond the near-field transducer in a cross-track direction and extends in a direction normal to the air-bearing surface.

A Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) device to perform accurate label-free long-read DNA sequencing. A Raman sensor has a hot spot defined by plasmonic nanostructures and excited by at least one laser. A system includes a chamber, a support structure disposed in the chamber, and one or more heads. The support structure is configured to support and position a substrate. The one or more heads includes an energy source coupled to a near-field transducer for providing localized energy towards the support structure at select locations within the chamber.

Atomic layer deposition systems, methods, and devices

Systems and methods for adding a cap-layer to magnetic recording media are described. In one embodiment, the method may include depositing a magnetic recording layer over a substrate, depositing an interface layer over the magnetic recording layer, and depositing a carbon overcoat layer over the interface layer. In some cases, sputter deposition is used to deposit at least the interface layer. In some cases, oxygen is used as a background gas of the sputter deposition.

A recording head comprises a waveguide core extending to an air-bearing surface, and a near-field transducer is centrally aligned with the waveguide core and positioned proximate a first side of the waveguide core in a down-track direction. The mirror extends in the direction normal to the air-bearing surface a first distance that is less than a second distance the near-field transducer extends in the direction normal the air-bearing surface. A recording head includes a waveguide core layer that delivers light from a light source to a region proximate a magnetic write pole. A near-field transducer that is formed of a thin metal film is deposited over the waveguide core layer. The near-field transducer includes an enlarged part with two straight edges facing a media-facing surface and at obtuse angles relative to the media-facing surface. A peg extends from the enlarged part towards the media-facing surface. The near-field transducer includes a metal aperture plate at the media-facing surface. The metal aperture plate surrounds at least three sides of the end of the peg.

Systems and methods for coating a near field transducer in a dielectric material are described. In one embodiment, the method may include forming a liquid solution comprising at least a first dielectric and a disk surface lubricant, forming a coating of the liquid solution on an outer surface of a storage medium based at least in part on dipping the storage medium in the liquid solution, and accumulating a first set of molecules of the first dielectric on a near field transducer (NFT) of a HAMR head based at least in part on evaporating a first portion of the first dielectric in the coating by performing a first HAMR writing operation that shines a laser on the coating.

The notch comprises at least one of Rh and Ir. A write pole is proximate the near-field transducer. The write pole has a back surface facing away from the media-facing surface and an aperture-facing surface proximate the aperture.

Devices that have an air bearing surface (ABS), the device includes a near field transducer (NFT) that includes a disc configured to convert photons incident thereon into plasmons; and a peg configured to couple plasmons coupled from the disc into an adjacent magnetic storage medium, wherein the disc includes a disc material that includes gold or an alloy thereof and the peg includes a peg material, wherein the disc material is different from the peg material and wherein the peg material has a real part of the permittivity that is not greater than that of gold.
