In accordance with the present invention a fiber optic array is provided. The array includes a substrate having a fiber support surface. The array further includes an optical fiber having a fiber portion that includes an un-jacketed, un-buffered optical core segment. The un-jacketed, un-buffered optical core segment is placed in contact with the fiber support surface to orient the optical core segment at a selected position relative to the support surface. In addition, the array includes a solder glass chemically bonded to the optical core segment and the fiber support surface so that the optical core segment is secured at a predetermined location relative to the support surface of the substrate. A method for fabricating such a fiber optic array is also provided.

The invention includes an optical fiber device, comprising at least one optical fiber over a substrate, at least one reentrant shape in the substrate adjacent to the optical fiber and a polymer that at least partially encapsulates the optical fiber and attaches the optical fiber to the at least one reentrant shape and methods for making the same.

The invention allows a purchaser of lottery tickets to scan multiple lottery tickets at once, send the resulting image to a web site, where the web site will indicate to the purchaser whether any of the tickets are winners and also highlight on the image for the purchaser the location of a winning ticket in the image and also highlight where on the ticket the winning number is. The method for checking lottery tickets comprises the steps of digitizing at least one lottery ticket comprising lottery numbers to form an image, performing optical character recognition on the image to obtain the lottery numbers, comparing the lottery ticket lottery numbers to at least one winning lottery number and reporting the winning status of the at least one lottery ticket.

The invention is a roller bottle having a cross-section that is substantially a non-circular closed curve of constant width, wherein said curve is preferably a Reuleaux triangle or a Reuleaux triangle with rounded corners and the use of the roller bottle for cell culture. This provides several benefits: 1) a larger surface area per unit volume than a circular cross-section, promoting growth of anchorage dependant cells while maintaining an easily harvested and cleaned smooth wall. 2) a translational motion in addition to the usual circular motion, which is expected to enhance gas exchange, especially at the cap, which normally sits on an axis and has low angular velocity. 3) greater agitation of the growth medium inside the bottle, without the need for difficult to manufacture inserts or internal baffles.

An RF-transparent sunshield membrane covers an antenna reflector such as a parabolic dish. The blanket includes a single dielectric sheet of polyimide film 1/2-mil thick. The surface of the film facing away from the reflector is coated with a transparent electrically conductive coating such as vapor-deposited indium-tin oxide. The surface of the film facing the reflector is reinforced by an adhesively attached polyester or glass mesh, which in turn is coated with a white paint. In a particular embodiment of the invention, polyurethane paint is used. In another embodiment of the invention, a layer of paint primer is applied to the mesh under a silicone paint, and the silicone paint is cured after application for several days at room temperature to enhance adhesion to the primer.

A superior bond is formed between a condensation cure silicone rubber and a polyimide film substrate when a primer composition of gamma-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane dissolved in N,N'-dimethylacetamide is first applied to the surface of the polyimide film and dried and cured thereon.

A process of making an improved coating composition by combining alkyltrialkoxy silanes such as n-hexyltrimethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane, in the presence of a silane catalyst having at least one amino-substituted functional group, at least one alkoxy-substituted group wherein the alkoxy-substituted group has at least 2 carbon atoms in the alkoxy group and optionally, an alkyl group, in an amount of water less than a stoichiometric amount of water. The combined monomer, catalyst and water are ultrasonically agitated to form an emulsion to hydrolyze the silanes to the extent permitted by the amount of water present and to form a moisture-curable coating composition. The coating composition of the present invention is a moisture-curable polymethyl-n-hexylsilsesquioxane having a partially water-hydrolyzed, silane catalyst-containing condensation product of n-hexyltrimethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane, the silane catalyst having at least one aminoalkyl-substituted group and at least one alkoxy-substituted group having at least 2 carbon atoms in the alkoxy group. The silane catalyst is also a co-curing agent and condenses with the n-hexyltrimethoxysilane and the methyltrimethoxysilane.

The coating composition of the present invention is a moisture-curable polymethyl-n-hexylsilsesquioxane having a partially water-hydrolyzed, silane catalyst-containing condensation product of n-hexyltrimethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane, the silane catalyst having at least one aminoalkyl-substituted group and at least one alkoxy-substituted group having at least 2 carbon atoms in the alkoxy group. The silane catalyst is also a co-curing agent and condenses with the n-hexyltrimethoxysilane and the methyltrimethoxysilane.

Polysilsequioxane and polymethyl-N-hexylsilsesquioxane coating

A composition suitable for forming polyalkylsilsesquioxane coatings is prepared by emulsion hydrolysis of one or more silanes in the presence of a nonvolatile, nonionic catalyst, a nonionic fluorochemical surfactant and sufficient water to only partially hydrolyze the silanes. The resulting stable composition will form the final resin upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. A novel resin, polymethyl/isobutylsilsesquioxane, is particularly suitable for such coatings.
