Acid-curable thermoset enamel compositions coming in contact with copper or copper-containing alloys are discolored and degrade more rapidly due to leaching of copper into the compositions. The presence of small amounts of benzotriazole or tolutriazole effectively prevents the discoloration and concomitantly retards degradation.

2-[2-Hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-octylphenyl]-2H-benzotriazole exhibits outstanding efficacy in protecting organic substrates from light induced deterioration as well as good resistance to loss by volatilization or exudation during the high temperature processing of stabilized compositions.

2-[2-Hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-octylphenyl]-2H-benzotriazole exhibits outstanding efficacy in protecting organic substrates from light induced deterioration as well as good resistance to loss by volatilization or exudation during the high temperature processing of stabilized compositions. This stabilizer and its 5-chloro analog exhibit great resistance to volatilization, enhanced solubility in selected solvents, desirable absorption characteristics in the ultraviolet range and photographic inertness. This combination of properties makes these benzotriazoles particularly useful in photographic compositions especially in protecting color dye images against the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.

The title compounds are prepared by reacting alkylated 1,1'-biphenyl-2,2'-diol or alkylated 2,2'-alkylidene-bis-phenol with phosphorus trichloride in an organic solvent and then reacting the intermediate phosphorochlorodite with an alkanolamine. Substituted 2-nitro-2'-hydroxyazobenzenes are prepared by adding an aqueous mineral acid solution of a diazotized o-nitroaniline to a strongly alkaline lower alkanol or aqueous lower alkanol solution of a substituted phenol, containing sufficient alkali metal hydroxide to assure a pH value substantially over 11 and an excess of hydroxyl ion in the reaction mixture even after all the acidic diazonium salt solution is added, wherein the reaction solvent mixture is at least 50% by weight of lower alkanol, at a reaction temperature between -15.degree. C. and +30.degree. C. The o-nitroazobenzenes obtained are intermediate products useful in the manufacture of benzotriazole UV absorbers.
