An optical system, including: (a) an emitter array including a plurality of individual emitters, wherein each emitter in the emitter array is operable to emit a light beam which is characterized by a native beam width; (b) an optical subunit, operable to transform a plurality of light beams emitted by the emitter array, wherein each of the transformed light beams is characterized by an expanded beam width that is wider than the native beam width of the corresponding light beam and is wider than a facilitating beam width; and (c) a diffractive optical element that is capable of diffracting the transformed light beams to provide light patterns whose angular resolution meets a light pattern target angular resolution criteria.

Stereoscopic device including an image directing assembly, an image differentiator and an image detector, the image directing assembly having a first light inlet for receiving a first image and a second light inlet for receiving a second image, the first light inlet being spaced apart from the second light inlet, the image differentiator differentiating between the first image and the second image, wherein the image directing assembly directs the first image to the image detector via a common path, and wherein the image directing assembly directs the second image to the image detector via the common path.

Optical device

In an optical inspection tool, an image of an object under inspection, such as a semiconductor wafer, may be obtained using imaging optics defining a focal plane. Light comprising the image can be detected using multiple detectors which each register a portion of the image. The image of the object at the focal plane can be split into two, three, or more parts by mirrors or other suitable reflecting elements positioned tangent to the focal plane and/or with at least some portion at the focal plane with additional portions past the focal plane so that the focal plane lies between the imaging optics and the splitting apparatus. In some embodiments, reflective planes may be arranged to direct different portions to different detectors. Some reflective planes may be separated by a gap so that some portions of the light are directed while some portions pass through the gap. Other splitting elements may comprise a group of transmissive and reflective areas interspersed in an element positioned at or in the focal plane, with some portions of the light are reflected to detectors while other portions pass through the element(s) to other detectors. Splitting apparatuses and elements may be cascaded.

Image splitting in optical inspection systems

A focusable imaging laser otoscope for performing laser surgery without the need for anesthesia, The apparatus includes a housing, an end member movably disposed within the housing, an imaging device attached to the housing for producing an image of a target area, an illuminating system attached to the housing for illuminating the target area, a speculum having a longitudinal axis and detachably attached to the end member, an optical system attached to the housing and having a main optical axis coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the speculum, for directing a surgical and/or an aiming laser beam from a laser source through the housing and the speculum to strike the target area and for directing image forming light rays to project an image of the target area onto the imaging device such that when the image of the target area is focused, the surgical laser beam and/or aiming laser beam are also focused on the target area, and a focusing assembly attached to the housing and to the end member for adjustably moving the end member and the speculum relative to the housing to focus the image of the target area. The otoscope may also be constructed without a focusing assembly, in which case the speculum may be detachably attached to the housing and the focusing is achieved by selecting an appropriate speculum from an available plurality of specula. The otoscope may also include a sensor system for indicating penetration of the target area. The sensor system may also automatically shut off the surgical laser after penetration of the target area.

Apparatus and method as preparation for performing a myringotomy in a child's ear without the need for anaesthesia

The present application discloses an apparatus and a method for synchronizing the activation of a light source with the position of a hand piece on a surface and for providing a substantially homogenous exposure of a surface to light irradiation. The apparatus includes a light source, a handpiece for delivering light pulses to the irradiated surface, and a beam delivery system for delivering light from the light source to the handpiece. The handpiece, which is moved along the surface by an operator, includes a sensor for sensing the distance traversed by the handpiece on the surface. The sensor sends signals to a signal processing unit which calculates the distance traversed by the handpiece on the surface and controls the activation of the light source either by automatically activating the light source or by providing the operator with a signal indicating that the light source should be pulsed. The handpiece can also include a device for cooling the irradiated surface and for marking the irradiated part of the surface with a visible marker. The handpiece may be constructed to be movable along a surface in a predetermined orientation relative to the handpiece. Alternatively, the handpiece may be freely movable along the surface in any desired orientation. The light source can be a pulsed laser, a continuous wave laser or a non-coherent light source.

Apparatus and method including a handpiece for synchronizing the pulsing of a light source

An adaptor attachable to a laser apparatus and to a microscope for directing a laser beam from the laser apparatus onto an object in a working plane as viewed via the microscope. The adaptor includes an optical system located in the path of the laser beam for focusing the laser beam onto an object in the working plane. The optical system includes a number of mirrors. The adaptor also includes a manipulatable mirror located between the optical system and the working plane. The manipulatable mirror is selectively manipulatable to direct the laser beam to any desired location in the working plane. Further the adaptor includes a focusser coupled to the optical system that is capable of selectively focusing and defocussing the laser beam.

Laser microscope adaptor apparatus

A system for delivering a CO.sub.2 laser beam to the roots of a tooth is provided. The system includes a laser beam source, a first fiber having a first diameter connected to the laser beam source at its proximal end and to a hand piece at its distal end, the hand piece including an optical assembly operative to transfer the beam from the distal end of the first fiber to the proximal end of a second fiber having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter with substantial power loss.

Apparatus and method for delivering CO.sub.2 laser energy

A method of delivering a laser beam from a laser to a working site, comprising applying the laser beam received from the laser to a first positive optical element which converges the laser beam; applying the laser beam received from the first positive optical element to a negative optical element which diverges the laser beam; applying the laser beam received from the negative optical element to a second positive optical element which substantially collimates the laser beam before being applied to the working site; and varying the distance between the negative optical element and the second positive optical element to thereby vary the diameter of the substantially collimated laser beam applied to the working site.

Laser beam delivery method and system

A laser micromanipulator for surgical applications includes an adaptor attachable to a laser and to a microscope which automatically maintains, preferably using phase detection, the laser beam in focus on tissue during any changes in the working distance by the surgeon manipulating the microscope.
